    Peter Minuit founded Delaware in 1638 and he came from the New Sweden Company. It is classified as one of the middle colonies.
  • The first African on the Delaware

    In 1639 the first African american was brought to Delaware from the Caribbean his name was Black Anthony. He was the first black slave in Delaware.
  • Delaware becomes a part of new Netherlands

    In 1655 the Dutch defeat the swedes on Delaware and ended the New Sweden Company
    The swedes surrender the colony without a fight and secede to stay in America pledging their allegiance to the Dutch

Delaware is known by this nickname due to the fact that on December 7, 1787, it became the first of the 13 original states to ratify the U.S. Constitution. “The First State” became the official State nickname on May 23, 2002
