Declaration of Independence
With independence gained from Britain, America was free to establish their own set of laws and liberties. This document helped to set the standards for how other countries can treat us. -
Seneca Falls Convention
This was a convention led by women to promote feminism in the United Stante. Being at such an early time in American history, it set the stage for feminist movements to come. -
Plessy vs Ferguson
In 1862, a man of Aferican decent was denied the right to be seated in a train coach. He later went to the courts and they decreed that blacks and white shall be "seperate but equal. -
Illinois Becomes 1st State to Repeal its Sodomy Laws
This bill abolished the Black Laws, except the law prohibiting intermarriage between the blacks and whites. Illinois was being bold in trailblazing civil rights so early. -
13th Amendment
This amendment abolished slavery. With this amendmen, blacks made their first steps towards freedom no longer being subject to servitude. -
14th Amendment
The 14th amendment gave equal protection under the law to people of all races post-Civil War, This was an important milestone for civil rights as blacks got their first taste of equality. -
15th Amendment
The 15th amendment gave U.S citizens the right to vote regardless of race, color, or previous history of servitude. For the first time, blacks could fuffil a part of their duty as a U.S citizen and vote. -
Colorado Becomes 1st State to Grant Women Suffrage
A referendum in Colorado made that state the second state to give women suffrage and the first state where the men voted to give women the right to vote. Colorado and idaho were the first two states to do this. -
NAACP Formed
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was formed to to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. This association is one of the largest and well know programs for racial equality. -
19 Amendment
Women were given the right to vote. For the longest time, women had no say in pretty much anything but now, they can fufil their duty as a U.S citizen and vote. -
Executive Order 10450
Ordered by Dwight D. Eisenhower, this responded to several years of charges that the presence of homosexual employees in the State Department posed blackmail risks. It was designed to encompass both loyalty and security risks. -
Brown v. Board of Education
This court case declared seperate public schools for blacks and whites unconstitutional. This decision overturned the Plessy v Ferguson case which decreed seperate but equal. -
One Inc v Olesen
This U.S Supreme Court decision declared homosexuality harrassment obscene and established a new de facto. Afeter being sued, One Inc lost all rights to publishing and credibility. -
Civil Rights Act 1965
Passed by the U.S legislature, this act outlawed discrimination against based on color, race, sex, or national origin.It ended racical segregation in schools, work places, and public facilities. -
Stone Wall Inn Riots
The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community in New York City. These riots were considered to be the most important events leading to gay equality. -
Title XI
This piece of legislature decreed that both men and women's programs get equal funding in NCAA. As a result, many colleges dropped programs to compensate for their budget. -
APA Removes Homosexuality as a Mental Disorder
American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the DSM as a mental disorder. For thousands of years, psychologist thought homosexuality was a mental disorder. -
Don't Ask Don't Tell
This policy prohibited military personell rom discriminating against gays and lesbians. Now that race and sex got their civil rights, gays and lesbians are now getting theirs. -
Defense of Marriage Act
This act allows states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages granted under the laws of other states. This act was later ruled unconstitutional in 2013. -
Massachusetts Legalizes Gay Marriage
Massachusetts declared that it was unconstitutional under the Massachusetts constitution to allow only opposite-sex couples to marry. Mass. bacame one of the first states to do this. -
Don't Ask Don't Tell Repealed
Before this was repealed, more than 2 million service men and women were prepared to deal with gays and lesbians in the armed forces. Now, the military has now such policy and still welcomes gays and lesbians. -
Voting Rights Act 1965
This piece of federal legislation prohibited discrimination in voting.This act was also designed to enforce the voting rights guaranteed in the 14th and 15 Amendments.
