The university's board of Trustees selected a hearing person to be the president of Gallaudet, despite all of the deaf people on campus that were candidates

anger, disbelief, hundreds of Gallaudet's students were furious at the news. several of them blocked the Florida Avenue traffic in protest.
it was until the president of National Association of the Deaf convinced everyone to protest at the Mayflower Hotel to ask for answers to the questions they had.
after arguing with the board, the marchers had left the hotel and gone to the white house. from there they proceeded to the Capitol Building, and then back to Gallaudet's campus -
throughout that morning, the campus was busy making demands, speeches, rallies, and protesting the following: Zinser must resign and a deaf president be selected
Spilman must resign from the Board
The perecentage of deaf members on the Board of Trustees must be increased to at least 51%
There mist be no reprisals against any of the protesters. these demands were brought to the Board in a meeting that lasted over three hours, but the board rejected all four demands. -
After the announcement was made that the protesters demands were denied, everyone marched to the U.S. Capitol Building. The story got big enough that Dozens of reporters were eager to hear about it all, and tried to immediately be on the scene to get as much information as possible.

students emerged as leaders of the protest.
rallies and speeches continued through the day, and had eventually reached beyond local media and was featured on many national and television programs across the county. -
the faculty of Gallaudet meet to decide whether or not they supported this protest, and at the end of the day came to the conclusion that they agreed to this protest.
they then urged Zinser to resign. -
one of the leaders of the potest appeared live on ABC's "Good Morning America" to speak of speculation that Zinser and Spilman were going to force their way onto campus.
the students then drove the school buses to the gates of campus and deflated the tires.
that night, Zinser announced her resignation. -
after Zinser's resignation, the people on campus celebrated. although there was still more to go.
there was a march at noon to the Capitol Building, and the crowd was treated to speeches by a variety of people. -
this day was a day of rest, and reccolection.

Board of Trustees members who had left after Zinser's selection as president returned to washington to discuss what would happen next.
and it was all over.
