Darwin Timeline

  • Charles Darwin Was Born

If he wasn't born we wouldn't have his theory. Plus we would have never had his book.
  • Enrolls at College

    Enrolls at College
Darwin enrolls at Christ’s College, Cambridge University to study theology. He is introduced to beetle collecting and becomes known as ‘the man who walks with Henslow’ through spending a lot of time with the professor of botany.
It contributes to his published book because he is understanding the rational study of concepts of God and its influences and of the nature of religious truths.
  • 5 Year Expedition on the survey ship HMS Beagle.

Darwin read Lyell's 'Principles of Geology' which talked about fossils found in the earth coming from a million years ago. Lyell's argument stuck into Darwins head by the rich variety of animal life and the geological features he saw during his voyage.
  • Breakthrough in Darwins ideas

    Breakthrough in Darwins ideas
Went to Galapagos Island, 500 miles west of South America. He noticed each island supported its own form of frinch that were closley related but diffrent in important ways.
  • 1st consideration of evolution of species 1835-1836

1st consideration of evolution of species 1835-1836
Darwin first considers the evolution of species while thinking about the variations among Galapagos mockingbirds, then wrote in his notebook, "If there is the slightest foundation for these remarks the zoology of Archipelagoes will be well worth examining, for such facts (would) undermine the stability of Species".
He is gettting more facts about evolution. Also learning more about how evolution is occuring.
  • Returned to England

    Returned to England
He tried solving the puzzle of the observations of how species evolved. He also proposed a theory of evolution occuring by th eprocess of natural selection, influenced by the ideas of Malthus.
  • Tree of Life

Darwin draws a simple evolutionary tree in one of his notebooks below the words ‘I think’. The lines on the tree show evolutionary relationships between species.
This means his idea showed species that are closely related are found close together, on the same branch. For example, humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans are all great apes, and so they all belong to the same branch of the Tree of Life.
  • Natural selection. 1838-1839

Darwin starts to develop his theory of natural selection. He is scared to share his idea with others because he knows the church won't like it. So he starts to find a lot of evidence to prove his ideas.
  • Darwin marries his cousin, Emma Wedgwood

They move to London and have 2 children. He also starts a natural history of babies, making detailed observations recording the development of expressions of emotion from birth, eventually they have 10 children, although only seven survive to adulthood.
Doing natural history of babies is giving him more evidence about evolution. If he wouldn't have had kids he wouldn't have started the natural history of babies.
  • Published Book

Darwin published Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle.
This has to do with evolution because it talks about an animals life, including there structure and the study of it. WHich gives him more evidence.
  • Publishes books and talks to Emma about essay.

Writes a memorandum to Emma Darwin requesting that this essay should be published if he should die unexpectedly, giving the names of several friends who would serve as possible editors. Publishes Geological Observations on the Volcanic Islands visited during the Voyage of HMS Beagle.
This will get his idea out even if he dies. Then publishing his observations on the volcanic islands shows more facts he found about evolution.
  • Publishing House

Expands and revises Journal of Researches for a second edition. Begins a lifelong relationship with the London publishing house of John Murray.
This will help his in publishing his book about his idea of evolution.
  • oldest daughter Annie dies and publishes more books

Annie dies of a fever age ten. Later Publishes the first of two volumes on barnacles, A Monograph on the sub-class Cirripedia, and the first of two volumes on fossil barnacles, A Monograph on the fossil Lepadidae.
Showing that fossils of older animals relate to other animals still alive. Also it is giving him evedence or evolution.
  • ill health

Seriously ill, consults many medical men about his symptoms. Ill health continues until spring 1866.
  • Brother Dies

Takes another holiday in the Lake District, based in Ullswater. In August his brother Erasmus dies, and is buried in Down churchyard.
