  • Galapagos Islands

    Darwin finds many species of plants, birds, tortoises unique to the Galapagos Islands, but they seem mysteriously related to mainland species. He is particularly fascinated and amused by the 'immense' Galapagos tortoise. They were so large he could not resist climbing on top for a ride.
    Of the many iguanas Darwin observes in the Galapagos Islands, the marine iguana is especially distinctive. No other iguana swims or feeds in the ocean. Darwin opens the stomach of serveral and finds seaweed.

    Many Galapagos animals were as strange as their surrondings and their color often blended with the lava around them. Darwin is stunned to learn back in London, that the group of Galapagos specimens he had thought included many different birds were actually finches.
