  • Nationalists escape to Taiwan

    The Chinese Civil War resumed and the Nationalists and Communists were at war. The Nationalists, led by Jiang Jieshi, seemed to be on top at first because of their army size and their US support, however the people of China did not like them. The Nationalists lost many soldiers to the Communists over the span of the war. FInally, the Communists controlled China and the Nationalists escaped to Taiwan.
  • Great Leap Forward

    Mao wants to increase the industry and productivity of China, so he creates the 5 Year Plan. To help reach the goal of the 5 Year Plan, he created the Great Leap Forward. The idea was to make more collective farms. The collective farms were huge, on average about 15000 acres. The people that lived in them were under very strict rule and owned nothing. All places were communal.Although the idea was for it to be a success, it was a huge failure and ended with 20 million people dead.
  • Cultural Revolution

    Mao had trained students to become a part of the Chinese Militia called the "Red Guard". Eventually, the Red Guard started an uprising. This uprising was named the Cultural Revolution. The uprising was fighting for total equality for everyone, and was lead by peasants and workers. The Red Guard closed schools all throughout China. They were also harsh with people who did not support the Cultural Revolution and sometimes killed them. Mao ordered for the Cultural Revolution to end in 1968.
  • Fall of Saigon

    The Northern part of Vietnam was Communist, while the Southern part was supported by the US. The Communists, let by Ho Chi Minh, had the Vietcong, which were Communist gurillas. The South was led by Ngo Dinh Diem, and he was very unliked in the South. In 1975, the North invaded and captured much of the land in the South, and renamed the city Saigon into Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Khmer Rouge

    There were communists in Cambodia and were called the Khmer Rouge, which translates into the Red Rule, with red meaning communist. The created a rule of Cambodia under Pol Pot. Pol Pot was a terrible killer that killed 2 million people which is about 25% of the population. The Vietnamese eventually attacked Cambodia and replaced the Khmer Rouge with a less opressive government. The Cambodians fought back and at the end, the ended up as a democracy.
