Jewish shops were destroyed and boycotted this included Daniel's father's shop this was a start of constant mass violence under Nazi rules, this could be a form of economic discrimination as they are destroying their livelihoods and vandalism -
Daniel gets in trouble
Daniel is forced to take pictures of Jewish people, his parents find out and he gets in trouble and Miriam doesn't want to be a burden and doesn't want to or see anyone else suffer so she overdoses on sleeping pills. -
Daniel goes outside
He gets a uniform that says Hitler youth, so he can pretend not to be Jewish and roam free, they make him take pictures of them humiliating Jewish people. He runs away after that. They ridiculed the people around Daniel -
Daniel is traumatized
Daniel keeps thinking about those pictures, his father finds out about the suit and he stops wearing it because he feels like it betrays his religion. This is an act of prejudice how they treated the Jewish people he saw -
They send Uncle Peter's ashes
The Nazis sent them a package, after not hearing from him for a long time they got worried, when they get a package from him they thought he was alive but the Nazis actually sent his ashes as a warning. Its murder which was biased based along with a warning for the family -
They are sent to a ghetto
Daniel doesn't like taking pictures or looking at his old ones as they bring him bad memories and remind him of his mother and sister that were separated from him. This is housing segregation as they are forcing them here -
He flashed back to his family
Him and his family were together but in hiding, people were dying constantly as he remembers, it became normal for people to die. I think this could be considered genocide because its these select people dying because of deprivation of food, water, e.t.c -
They all work in the ghetto
There finally seemed to be in a standstill as nothing too much happened and everyone worked but Oma Rachel gets sick, she gets a bed in the hospital however the next day the hospital was evacuated, Oma Rachel was then taken, children and older people got deported. More are taken away
Children are being taken away, they hide two children, however Leah tries to stay with them resulting in the death of the children and Leah as they were shot the Nazis also decide to take Mia. This is murder and a threat to the overall Jewish community that if they try to rebel they will be killed -
Daniel meets someone named Rosa
Conditions are unhigenic and to make sure they don't get diseases like lice they have to pick it out of their clothes, they can't take bathes and when they use soap is for dishes. Erika is happy and bursts into the room while they are doing this with a girl named Rosa who Daniel seems to like, his family laughs at him which is the first time in a while. They are being dehumanized and try to stand together -
Rosa restores Daniel's faith
Daniel says he is losing faith in god and humanity but when he meets Rosa her smile inspires him, she also helps a resistance against them. She says hope is what keeps Jewish people contempt and should resist even if it causes them their life. Daniel thinks Rosa does have hope, Rosa has a quick comeback that makes everyone else in the group laugh. More examples of how Daniel was dehumanized leading him to lose faith briefly -
Everyone is anxious, Daniel likes Rosa
Only 80,000 people are left in the ghetto about half the people died in 3 years. Erika plays in an orchestra, this reminds Daniel of better times. Daniel and Rosa find out they are going to their death if they are taken. Daniel and Rosa's relationship gets better -

His Mom gets sick, Erika is worse
His mother keeps getting sick but still works because she needs to feed people. They decide to take a dead mans furniture for fire wood. Erika's health declines and she has to hide her violin as they are being taken away -
They share soup and go on a strike
Erika makes a strike because she was fired, the staff gets good food while they don't so they decide to stop working. They now share the food, Rosa thinks death is a better option then living how they are right now. -
Bad and good news come
Fredrich moves in with them and Rosa moves closer. News of D day gets around, they take radios and arrest people. More mass transports happen, they reduced the ghetto size. They get a notice to go to the ghetto. Erika and her mom get very sick. Daniel and Fredrich are forced to hide as their parents and Erika have to go. Erika gives them a speech about how they cannot stay in despair -
Daniel is being taken to Aushwitz
Daniel is being taken from Lodz in freight car that many people are in, they are struggling and he thinks many will die, he is unsure if they actually are taking them away from the ghetto. They are dehumanizing all those people, they are likely going to a concentration camp which also could be genocide -
Rosa hides and Daniel gets captured
Rosa hides while Daniels family goes to Aushwitz. Daniel should be staying but a gestapo officer catches him. They put him in a freight train. Many people die in the freight cars, he sees his family but they don't see him. He catches up with his father they are cleaned etc. Daniel's father isn't sure if Erika his Wife are dead. They are being cruelly Dehumanized -
They resist and learn their mother is dead
They learn from Adam that their concentration camp could possibly be liberated soon, Erika falls in into despair, from that Daniel and his father deduce that their mother is dead. -
The resistance is determined
Adam tells Daniel they have something big planned to overthrow the camp as he bleeds. They kill 3 officers and Erika in the little time they are able to talk confirms that her mom is dead. She is forced to leave after and thinks she will be taken away in the next wave -
They are moved
They are taken to Buchenwald. He meets someone who was put in a camp for their activism and not a Jew who had been there atleast 5 years. There a child falls so is shot by an officer, he tries to get up but cannot so the officer kills him. Daniel is disgusted by this and he is forced to clean it up. -
Daniel and his father resist
As the allies get closer there is a resistance group that sabotages the Nazis as they build a gas chamber, Nazis try to negotiate with the allies/ starts killing more Jews -
They take control of the camp and can leave
Daniel goes up to the Nazi who shot the child with his own daughter, he was selfish and only was scared when the gun had been turned on him. They get rations but Daniels father doesn't want him to get used to that food. He was excited to finally get his own bed and celebrates his freedom -
They go back to Lodz
They go back to Lodz see whether Erika, Rosa, Frerich, etc are alive. They get into a fight and Daniel shots someone. Peter gets beatup and has to go to the hospital, they have to go to a hospital in Lodz. Peter gets put in a coma -
Daniel finds Rosa and they live happily
Peter dies and Daniel finds out Erika is dead, he meets up with Rosa where they decide to name their children of lost loved ones they question if Jews will survive everything but are glad they did, they start a new life and live happily.
