In 1933, Adolf Hitler is in power in Germany. He has a large socialist political party called the Nazi's. Hitler's main goal was to get rid of people who seemed impure to him. Those people were Jewish people, they were Hitler's scapegoat. Nazis used de-humanization as a way to treat the Jews. People were being killed, forced to work, starved to death, etc -
As things were getting worse with Hitler's plan, Daniel and Jewish students began to be discriminated in their schools. In Daniel's school, his teacher began to discriminate their Jewish students based on their religion call them slurs. Teachers began to discriminate their students educational wise. Even in some schools, students were being thrown out of their schools for being Jewish. -
One of Daniel's family members got him a Hitler youth outfit to help disguise himself from Nazi's for when he goes out. If he wore the outfit, he wouldn't seem like he was Jewish. Another reason for the Hitler youth outfit was to keep Daniel's family safe too so they wouldn't be killed or kidnapped and sent to a concentration camp -
Another event that happened was that to tell which was which, they had Jewish people wear Yellow star of David's tags. This made the Nazi's job much more easier to tell who they wanted to capture and put into concentration camps, vandalize their business, or even kill them. -
Where Daniel lives, it isn't a good place for him and his family. They ended up moving to a ghetto home. A ghetto was a place where Jews were able to live and hide from Nazis. The living situation wasn't good and people lacked food for their families. Daniel's family didn't have a lot of room but they tried to work with it. -
Daniel is now 15 and he is working his hardest by working. His main goal now is to survive with food for him and his family. In the ghettos, people are starving. Daniel's family and Daniel were trying to get as much nutrient to fight off diseases since there was a lot of disease in the ghettos. -
On Daniel's 16th birthday, he went to the library with Rosa. They both met up with the group they go to the library with. They discuss about the deportations from 1942 to their present time. Rosa has a plan to find hiding spots for people to hide in and to set up a system to help save people. -
In the summertime, Rosa and her family had to move because the Germans ordered to have a part of the ghetto closed. They moved closer to Daniel's home and convinced Friedrich to move in with Daniel. This helped trying to communicate easier for Daniel and Rosa and having meetings to discuss how to get out of this situation faster. -
In August, Rosa and Daniel say goodbye to each other. Her and her family need to go into hiding due to the situation getting worse. They give each other a kiss goodbye and hope for the best. The next day,Daniel's family also separates. No one knows if they will ever see each other again so this is very emotional for everyone. This is the best solution for everyone and to hopefully survive. -
Father and Daniel are on the train to a concentration camp in Auschtiz. They're there for forced labor so it can soon kill them. Daniel's plan is so be able to live so he tries his hardest. One day as they're working, Daniel sees his sister Erika playing the violin. He noticed she looked really sick and skinny. In the concentration camps, people were being treated horrible being forced to work and starve. -
When Daniel and his father arrived at the camps, their main thoughts were Erika and mother. As they went to work the next day, Daniel meets a guy named Adam. They saw that Jewish people were being transported to the camps being killed. They both knew that this was wrong and that it was a Bias-motivated violence by murdering people who did no harm. Adam found out that Daniel takes pictures and if he took pictures, it could help save them. People were going to help him out of his job to do it. -
Adam tells Daniel that he won't let the SS guards to get the satisfaction that they want. Daniel tries to warn him but Adam is very sure of it. Daniel then goes away from Adam and sees him shoot the SS guard. After Adam shot the guard, everyone had to go back to work as if nothing occurred. Daniel admired Adam and the way he chose to die getting his revenge in some way. -
In the spring, Daniel would take photos of people who were being sent to their immediate death. He disliked that this was happening. The Nazi's had more power during this time. None of the Jews had much power to defend themselves. Later on, Daniel ends up shooting one of the SS guards. He ends up going to one of the SS guards who killed the young boy and holds a gun to his head. -
Daniel and father were finally free. They had access to good foods and beds. Daniel's ideas was to go see rosa and find Erika and Fredrick with father and Peter. He is much more stronger than before. As they are on their way to the Lodzs, Polish boys stopped them and grabbed Peter. They attack Him and Peter, calling them names. Non-Jewish people were so anti-sentimental towards jews discriminating them. -
Daniel and father were sent to a different camp. This was the main camp for people Hitler hated the most. When Daniel got to work, he saw a young boy sweeping the walkway. He missed a piece of dirt and got shot by one of the guards. He saw how much hatrid people had towards Jewish people which angered him and felt like he could be next. -
At last, Daniel is finally at Lodz. He looks for Rosa, and notices her. She looks healthy and is alive. He hugs her and kisses her crying. They talk for a few and they tell each other that they love each other. Rosa then tells that Erika has passed on due to becoming really sick. Finally they decide to move to Palestine for a new beginning.
