Germany's mistreatment of the Jews is getting worse and Daniel's family discusses leaving Germany.

Daniel learns that all shops owned by Jews in Germany were being boycotted.

Mr. Schneider, Daniel's teacher blamaed him for fights and said he was a natural troublemaker because he was a Jew. Daniel begins to attend a school for all Jewish student where Uncle Peter is his teacher.

Uncle Peter is arrested and sent to Dacheau concentration camp because of a parking ticket he received two years earlier.
Daniel and his younger sister Erika see a newsreel that portrayed Jews in an unfavorable way. This caused them both to have nightmares. -
The identification card is stamped with a J to show he was Jewish. It had to be carried at all times and if it wasn't you would be arrested.

The windows in the family hardware store were smashed and the store was looted. All night long Daniel heard the sound of broken glass of synogogues, Jewish stores, homes,and prayer halls. Daniel's father told him the events of the night started in Paris when a young Polish Jew shot a German official and now the Jews needed to be taught a lesson.

The yellow star showed that Daniel was Jewish and if he did not wear it he would be killed.

The uniform was given to him to keep him safe and make him feel free. He could now go places that he would not have been allowed to go.

Oma Mariam left a note saying that she feard for what was ahead and she did not want to suffer or see her family suffer.

Daniel and his family are sent to Lodz, a ghetto in Poland. The Nazi's took over their home and all their belongings. The ghetto had over 230,000 Jews living in the poorest, dirtiest area of the city. People starved and froze to death, including Georg, Daniel's cousin and Aunt Anna.

Radios were illegal but Daniel's father traded a box of noodles for the radio. The radio allowed them to listen to the news in secret. If they were caught with the radiothe family would be shot.

Young children and old people who could not work were to be sent away. Erika and Fredrich were hidden in a cupboard but when the Nazi's tried to take Gertrude and Bridget, Auntie Leah wouldn't let them go so they were all shot.

Daniel and his father are separated from his mother and Erika. They believe they both were killed in the gas chambers. Daniel and his father were in a barracks with 800 men. At 4:30 am they were made to stand out in the freezing cold to be counted and were given only watery soup to eat.

Daniel and his father realize that the ordeal is over for them and they are now truly free. They cry for the family members that they lost.
