Over the month of July I plan to begin my personal growth by reading the novel Educated by Tara Westover and her experiences in the education system.
I also plan to begin listening to the podcast The Heart by Kaitlin Priest and her personal experiences based off of gender and sexuality. -
This summer, I will begin reaching out and collaborating with other staff members teaching elective courses. I plan to discuss what we can do to eliminate the stigmas we have seen over our courses, and how we can focus on promoting diversity in our classrooms.
-
Preparing for the 2020-2021 school year, I plan to work with the admin and counseling departments to analyze enrollment data for this first semester, specifically the building as a whole and elective courses, and discuss ideas to diversify these numbers
-
At the beginning of the year, I will do a comfort quiz with my students over their comfortability with diversity pertaining to patients such as "would it offend you if a patient made a choice you did not believe in based off of their religion?" Their answers will remain anonymous, but will set up our discussion over implicit bias and being ethical in the medical field.
-
After each unit, I plan to analyze my seating charts to make sure that each table is representing diversity, and each student feels comfortable enough to share and engage in conversations. The students will learn how to respect and understand culture when working with peers
-
For guest speakers, we will have a male and a female who work in nursing. They will present on what their day to day life is like, why they chose that career, and any biases they may experience. After we will have class conversations about gender biases in the medical field.
-
Students will chose two other countries to compare/ contrast medical trends from the United States. They will explore what hospitals are like, insurance, treatment plans, technology etc to understand what differences are valued in healthcare based off of geographical location.
-
Before second semester, I plan on working with the counseling department to create a short presentation to showcase elective courses. I want to display them in an inclusive way for all students, to hopefully spark interest for students to enroll in before the next semester. They will presented to all students in study hall.
-
For personal growth I will continue educating myself by reading Lies My Teachers Told Me by James W. Loewen and listening to Making Gay History podcast by Eric Marcus to continue to learn on how to show compassion towards students and educate them in the best way they can learn.
-
My students and I will dive into a 5 chapter book called "For the Good of Mankind" which shares what clinical trials have looked like in healthcare, and how unethical a majority of them have been. I will use this reading to have conversations with my students as of why patients have been treated unethically and discriminated against in healthcare.
-
When studying nutrition, my students will research diet culture and diet trends for females: why they diet, how damaging it can be for them physically, emotionally, mentality, etc. Instead, my students will produce a nutrition and wellness plan that will help patients live a healthy life style.
-
I will lead a professional development lesson with the staff of the importance of CTE elective courses, and ways the staff can promote diversity in these courses. These courses are especially important for students who do not plan on attending college or need to start working right after high school to provide for their families. Often times these students can complete important programs, such as their CNA, in high school.
-
My students will practice legal documents such as a living will, DNR, power of attorney, etc to understand as patients what rights and decisions they can make themselves based off of their beliefs. This will help them understand how they will have to show understanding and compassion towards a patient's decisions.

With the admin, counselors, and staff I plan to evaluate and review: enrollment numbers, student surveys over diversity, activities and lessons implemented, etc. What can we continue that worked next year and what can we still improve on?
