COVID-19 and Its Effect on Education

  • The Outbreak

    The Outbreak
The COVID-19 sequence originated in China and was quickly shared with everyone around the world, swiftly evolving from an epidemic to a pandemic. Almost a year later, and everyone knows what the virus is, but barely anyone knows how to make a safe vaccine.
  • The First Quarantine

    The First Quarantine
In the middle of the school year, schools announced that they would close until more information about the new virus was announced; the students thought it would just be a week, but that was the last day that we would physically go to school for nearly 8 months.
  • A New Way of Going To School

A New Way of Going To School
Since COVID-19 started, classes were forced to either switch to an online system or be dropped from the curriculum. It could be difficult for the teachers to modify their teaching styles to fit online learning since a lot of kids switched to online. An example would be electives like Art; an art teacher can't show their students specific techniques on camera as well as they would be able to in their classroom.
  • First Day of School

    First Day of School
We started late in the school year and that was a big change. When online school was first introduced, it was a trainwreck, so schools nationwide had a lot of kinks to work out before the new school year. Quite frankly, I don't think anyone knew what to expect on the first day of school, resulting in a plethora of anxiety, worry, and doubt.
  • Homework

    Homework
Homework has changed I think because it might be hard to figure out how to give everyone assignments online. Teachers have to figure out what websites they can use or if they can email papers to students who are online.
  • SAT/ACT

    SAT/ACT
Taking the SAT and ACT was supposed to be easy but, not in 2020. Some people signed up to take the SAT or ACT and sometimes kids could't take it because one got cancelled. Maybe too many people signed up and then some kids had to be kicked off the list. It is hard especially if someone really wanted to use it for college.
  • Midterms

    Midterms
Something that changed because of COVID-19 was the midterms. We didn't take midterms this year and it was different because I was so used to getting ready to study for them. I feel like it gave the teachers less stress to figure out how to write the questions and grade everything.
  • Finals

    Finals
We don't know how finals are going to be since we didn't have midterms this semester. I think we might have finals but I don't know how they are going to go. It is hard to tell what the teachers want to do since everything is online and only some students are going back to school.
  • Graduation

    Graduation
Graduation might be different this year. We don't know what will happen by graduation and we could have a virtual graduation. If COVID is still here, the school might do what they did last year and separate everyone and have everyone wear masks.
  • The Future

    The Future
In 2020, a lot of things have changed and one main thing was that schools were different this year. Teachers had to figure out how to set up lessons, homework, and tests online. We got through most of the year but we don't know what might happen in the future. Teachers are learning a lot this year and learning about the internet. They could change the way that they use the Internet and they could change the way that they show their lessons.
