    The Proto-Punk genre is the name given to the period prior to 1976 where punk got its name, this period consits of many vietnam war political rock bands such as Black Sabbath, The Mc5 and the Stooges all of which were a massive influence on Punk rock bands of the late 70's, 80's. new sounds of music and attitude boundries were being explored until punks breakout in 1976

    The Ramones are cited as the very first punk band, following inspirations from the protopunk/garage bands the stooges, the New York Dolls and the MC5. The Ramones started playing in a club called CBGB's where they legitimized their music and attitudes by performing and releasing records. They were a massive influence on many Punk bands worldwide especially for America.

    SEX was a boutique store that opened in March 1974, the store was owned by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, the store sold bondage and fetish sex wear as well as political and controversial clothing items. The store became a major gathering point for british punks, the store also marked the fashion style that would accompany british punk rock, as well as being another early example of the Do-It-Yourself ethic that was highly associated with punk.

    With famous bands such as the Ramones and the Sex Pistols now doing extensive touring, people are becoming inspired Henry Rollins lead singer of Black Flag describes his first encounter with the Ramones, "The moment i felt Dee Dee Ramones sweat on my body from the stage 2 ft high and 1 feet away, i knew that performing was what i wanted to do". Many other bands such as the Clash, Bad Brains, The Bags, the Germs and the Buzzcocks etc. are forming and performing.

    The First Issue of Punk Magazine is released, Volume 1, Number 1. The cover shows Lou Reed, its contents features a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Punk anthem as well as an article on Marlon Brando the "original punk". The release of this magazine marked the beginning of the Punk scene and was the first time the word 'Punk' was attatched to the growing genre.

    Although initial issues only sold 50 copies, circulation soon increased to 15,000. The innovative appeal of Sniffin' Glue was its immediacy. "Sniffin' Glue was badly written grammar was non-existent, layout was haphazard, headlines were usually just written in felt tip, swearwords were often used in lieu of a reasoned argument all of which gave Sniffin Glue its its urgency and relevance."

    I Blame Society: The MasqueThe Masque was a basement that was rented out by Brendan Mullen in 1977, the basement was located on hollywood boulevard and became the rising point for Hardcore Punk. Bands such as the Germs, The Bags and The Weirdo's. these bands didnt last much longer than the Masque's closure in early December due to the L.A. police department closing it down. However, the scene not only inspired other scenes to emerge but it also legitimized the early Punk scenes Music and attitude of freedom of exppression

    Punk Scene

    Once numerous bands had formed a scene had grown, one that was darkened by the media and hidden from contemporary music. The scene had spread from America to the U.K. to Australia and it was cited to have finished/'died' on 26th June 1986 on Black Flags last show. 1986 marks the year of the beginning of multiple New Wave and Crossover Thrash bands forming, by this point many punk bands had broken up, or merged to these genres. Any remaining punk bands had little to no attention.

Punk rock has reached its peak with shows selling out and bands being major gathering points for many punks. The punks of 1980-1983 had legetimised their music by releasing music from labels such as Dischord. They had documented their Attitudes in zines such as Sniffin' Glue, and they had cemented their attitudes by documenting their scenes such as The Decline of Western Civilisation.

    Dischord Records is a Washington, D.C.-based independent record label. The label is co-owned by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, who founded Dischord in 1980 to release Minor Disturbance by The Teen Idles. The label is most notable for employing the do-it-yourself ethic, producing all of its albums by itself and selling them at discount prices without finance from major distributors. Dischord continues to release record by bands from Washington D.C., and to document and support the D.C. music scene.

    Minor Threat was a hardcore punk band, formed in Washington, D.C. in 1980 and disbanded in 1983. The band was relatively short-lived, but had a strong influence on the hardcore punk scene, both stylistically and in establishing a "do it yourself" (DIY) ethic for music distribution and concert promotion. Minor Threat's song "Straight Edge" became the eventual basis of the straight edge movement, a movement revolving around a no drinking, no smoking, no promiscous sex.

The diary entries contain multiple poems and memoirs that describe his time in Black Flag, the novel explores his attitude and thought process behind multiple events of his life. The publishment of his novel in 1994 showcases how legetimate his music and attitudes are.

The lyrics of the song call for abstinence from alcohol and other drugs, it initially found a small but dedicated following. Other prominent groups that subsequently advocated the straight edge stance include SS Decontrol and 7 Seconds. The Movement was legitimized by multiple bands and support groups.

Featuring concert footage of legendary Los Angeles punk bands and interviews both with band members, the publishers of Slash fanzine, and with the punks who made up their audience, The movie had legitimized the L.A. punk scenes music and had reflected the attitudes of the punks at the time.
