Galerius died in 311 resulting in a competition among many powerful men to take over the Roman Empire. Civil war erupted and Maxentius, who live in Rome, declared himself emperor and took control of Rome and Italy. Constantine and his army marched against Maxentius.

In 312 Constantine approached Rome with reason to worry since his army was only about half the size of Maxentius' army. Prior to facing Maxentius in battle Constantine had a dream where he was told he would win the battle if he fought under the Christian Cross. The following day Constantine had his soldiers paint crosses on there shields. They dominated the battle, defeated Maxentius and took control of Rome.

Constantine forged an alliance with Lincinius in the east after taking Rome. Constantine became the emperor of west and Lincinius became the emperor of the east. They signed the Edict of Milan 313 stating Christians would no longer be persecuted in the Roman empire since Constantine now considered himself a Christian.
