In 1962, a scientist named JCR Licklider proposed the idea of a network of computers that could to talk to one another. JCR Licklider was considered one of the most important people in computing history as he started the history of computers that we use today.

In 1969, the first EVER message was sent from one computer to another over the ARPANET. The letters for ARPANET stand for 'Advanced Research Projects Agency Network'. It was set up by a branch of the U.S Department of Defence in partnership with four universities. The first attempt of sending the message didn't work quite as planned as only two letters were sent 'LO'.

By the end of the year, only 4 computers were connected by this network. In 1971, the university of Hawaii's Aloha net was added followed by various networks in London. In Norway two years later, Ray Tomlinson was developing the first every system to send mail back and forth between the users of ARPANET. This would eventually be called electronic mail.

Computer scientist named Vinton Cerf invented a way to introduce computers across the globe to each other in a virtual space. This invention was called TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROTOCOL.
-
In 1980, scientists started to use surfs protocol to send data back and forth. The computers also invaded British homes for the first time and became very popular.
-
In the 1990's is where everything started to come together and where it began. A computer programmer called Tim-Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. The WWW wasn't just a data sharing place for a scientists anymore... this was an entire network of information that was accessible to EVERYBODY with an internet connection!

In 1992, a browser named Earl Wise was created. Earl Wise was an internet browser and the first ever browser to have a graphic interface.
-
In 1993, Mosaic was created and it would popularise surfing the web. Mosaic influenced many of the browsers to follow including Netscape Navigator.
-
In 1994, Netscape Navigator became the most popular web browser at the time accounting for 90% of the web usage in the year 1995.

In the early 90's, companies such as; AOL and CompuServe we beginning to provide dial-up internet access. What is dial-up? - Dial up is a method of connecting the internet by a telephone line. Your telephone line was plugged into a modem and the other end was plugged into a phone jack.
-
Carrying on in the early 90's, there was a period in history where you could not use your telephone in the internet at the same time. Without the internet we wouldn't most obviously have social media that we have now, such as; Facebook, Instagram, twitter and snap chat. We also would not be able to access info in seconds! We also would not be able to communicate with others far away, or even close. Life would be SO different without it.
