1736 Fort Frederica in Georgia
In 1736 Fort Federica was built and named after King George II. It was Oglethorpe's largest and strongest strong hold. This fort was played a big part in history because this is where Oglethorpe retreated to and help up at while battling the Spanish to the south. From Fort Frederica is where the soldiers departed from to battle in the Battle of Bloody Marsh. I choose this because I found it very interesting that not many attempts were made on this Fort and its perseverance with Oglethorpe away. -
1736 Union Fire Company
Ben Franklin organized the first volunteer fire fighter organization in America. -
1743 William Stephens becomes President of Georgia
In 1743 Oglethorpe leaves Georgia for good and the Trustees makes William Stephen president of the colony. With this change comes big changes from the Trustees original ideals of the colony. Stephens started issuing larger land grants to wealthier immigrants. With pressure from other high profile citizens and Stephens the Trustees to fold on their ideals like slavery. First Constitutional Convention
The first Constitutional Convention held 3 months after the colonies declared their independence from the King. They made what is know as the Constitution of 1777. Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is endorsed by the Continental Congress. -
Georgia ratifies the U.S. Constitution
Georgia was the 4th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. This comes after lots of back and forth to support the colonies in fighting for independence from the King. It is ironic after not sending any delegates to the first meeting of the continental congress to be the 4th state to ratify the Constitution. I chose this because it is one of many times in history the Georgia could not align and stand up for justice and freedom. -

Creeks relinquish their land in Georgia.
The Indian Springs treaty is signed relinquishing all Creek Indian lands in Georgia. This is significant because these would be some of the first lands auctioned off in the land lotteries. This is not the first take over of Indian lands and would not be the last. I chose this because I found it interesting how much of the land I have lived and traveled all over for most of my life was originally the land of the Creek Indians and it was basically taken from them just because. -
6th U.S. President
John Adams is inaugurated as the 6th U.S. President. -
Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears happened when the Cherokee Indians were forcibly removed from their lands. Georgia wanted to take over the land to distribute in two land lottery. The Cherokee Indians were removed forcibly after not wanting to cede to the treaty that a few of the chiefs signed and the supreme court upheld. Iowa territory was created. -
Atlanta Incorporated
Atlanta becomes incorporated this year and is named after Governor Lumpkin's daughter Atalanta. I chose this because Atlanta is our state capitol and I feel that it is important to know the history of a place you call home. So many people are "proud ATL'ians" but have no idea the history that the cities bones are built on. -
Thomas Edison is Born
Tomas Edison was born on this day in Milan, Ohio. -
Underground Rail Road
Harriet Tubman escaped to the North and started being a conductor of the Underground Rail Road. She helped to smuggle out thousands of slaves. I chose this because I admire Ms. Tubman for being willing to put her life on the line to save other in the name of what is right and just. I wish more people these days had her mindset. -
1857 Slaves in Georgia
The Georgia Supreme justifies and encourages moderate correction. They were very vague on what the term moderate stood for and left that up to slave owners discretion. To the point the if a slave were to die due to moderate correction act the death would be considered justifiable homicide. I chose this because of how angry it makes me that this was acceptable. Now they talk about sending 14 yr olds to jail but back then it was considered justifiable for an adult under these circumstances. -
Dred Scott Case
The Dred Scott case in the United States Supreme court established slaves as property. -
Military Leader Captured and Arrested
In May of 1865 Jefferson David is captured and arrested for his involvement in the Civil War. This is a man who thought he would run away with the states money and live out the rest of his life the way he wanted. I chose this because this man stepped up to try and pull the south into the lead in the war and thought he was just going to walk away free and clear when they lost. -
The Veto didn't matter
Even though President Johnson veto's the civil rights bill Congress passes it anyway. -
The Surrender
General Lee surrenders to the Union Army. The state was divided in the beginning about going to War. This surrender brought the end to a war that most did not think the Confederate Army had a chance to win. So much of Georgia's economy and way of life was destroyed in this war. I chose this because it was the first step in Georgia history for equality and everything has to start somewhere. -
Assassination
Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilks Booth. -
14th Amendment
Despite losing the war and slaves being emancipated Georgia rejects the 14th amendment. Georgia did not immediately rejoin the union and went back and forth about accepting the 14th amendment several times. I chose this because it angers me how much Georgians and Georgia legislature fought to oppress African Americans because of the color of their skin. -

Congress passes the 14th Amendment -
15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment is ratified. -

Georgia is officially readmitted to the Union. This comes after several changes in politics, economic changes, and social changes. The state has been through so many up and downs and this will be the start of healing for the citizens. I chose this because it feels to me like Georgia was finally accepting that change had to happen and they were not going to be able to stop it. -
Salvation Army comes to Georgia
In October of 1890 the Salvation Army comes to Georgia and grows slowly but then by the end of the 20th century has over 130 facilities. I chose this because so many people equate the Salvation Army to a thrift store instead of its original origin of being and Army against sin and poverty. I think that it was and is a very noble cause. -
Battle of Wounded Knee
This was the last major battle between U.S. troops and Indians. -
Jim Crow in Georgia
In 1891 Georgia enacted Jim Crow laws along with three other states this year. Following two other states that already enacted them. This was the legal separation of everything by based on race. This gave business owners the right to deny someone services based on the color of their skin. It gave separate water fountains, schools, and so many other things simply based on the color of a person's skin. -
Jim Crow
Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee adbot Jim Crowe laws -
Atlanta Massacre
Dozen of black people were killed and black business destroyed after a newspaper reported allegations of a black men assaulting white women. I chose this because it shows that men and women have reacted to media propaganda without getting all the facts for decades. It could have been false and if not these people murdered had no connection to it at all except for the color of their skin. We need to stop grouping people together simply by characteristics and hold every person to their own merit. -

This organization had give many scholarships to further the education of women. I chose this because I was a girl scout growing up and toured the founders house in Savannah. I remember my time as a scout fondly and still love the cookies. -
The Georgia Warm Springs Foundation
This year The Georgia Warm Spring Foundation was founded by Franklin D Roosevelt. March of Dimes operates the foundation that aids in the treatment of poliomyelitis. 1st Peachtree Road Race
This was the very first Peachtree Road Race that was ran. It had 150 runners that did the 10K run. (6.2 miles) I chose this because I started doing 5K's about three years ago and have done two 10Ks both being the virtual Peachtree Road Race in 2020 and 2021. "Running" this race is a tradition that I hope to continue for many years to come. -
Redesign the Georgia State Flag
Legislature is passed this year to redesign the state flag to omit the confederate symbol. There was a lot of controversy over this as many saw symbol as the states history of being a slave state and fighting to stay one. I chose this because of how long it took to make the change. Seems like now the hint that something may be offensive the name gets changed. For example The Dixie Chicks became the "Chicks" no one cared about their name and it got changed but it took decades to change the flag? -
Pioneer 10
The last communications to Pioneer 10 happen at the end of January 2003 -
