    After the Korean War between North Korea, allied with China, and the United States, the Chinese economy was damaged. The war was costly resulting in debt and many deaths in their army.
  • Five Year Plan

    A plan instilled by Mao Zedong inspired by Stalin's Five Year Plans in the Soviet Union. This plan focused on industrialization and modernization.
  • Land collectivization

    All land is collectivized and farmers are organized into (large) People's Communes
  • Great Leap Forward

    The Chinese built a plan to industrialize quickly. They wanted to depend heavily on labor and machinery to develop China.
  • Cultural Revolution

    In the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Mao Zedong shut down schools with the goal of "strengthening" the youth. He made a group called the Red Guards made up of students who later revolted against Mao's ideas.
