Colonial acts

  • Proclamation of 1763

    This act confined the colonies territory to avoid confrontations with the Native Americans and strengthen British hold on the colonies. People reacted by either losing lots of money by moving back east, or simply didn't listen and continued to travel west.
  • Sugar Act

    The sugar act of 1764 was a revised version of the 1733 sugar and molasses act. It was designed to strengthen navy presence and tax size to slow or even stop the evasion of taxes. This resulted in several boycotts of luxury items as to prove their self reliance.
  • Currency Act

    This act stabilized the production of bills to stop the confusion being caused by the printing of and use of different kinds of bills from the different colonies. The colonists protested, because their trade failed because of their lack of government funds.
  • Stamp Act

    An act that applied taxes to countless everyday items, many of which were paper products. The responses to the taxes ranged from boycotts to full on riots and attacks on tax collectors.
  • Quartering Act

    An act that required colonists to house any British soldier, and if their how isn't large enough then they must pay for their stay in a local inn. In response to the act the colony of New York refused to comply and funds were taken away and they lost their legislative power.
  • Declaratory Act

    This act stated that any law or tax made by the British colony has complete power in america and can not be overruled. The colonies reacted by repealing the stamp act and completely disagreeing with parliaments power to tax without representation.
  • Townshed Acts

    This was a series of acts passed that added taxes to things like paint and glass, along with taking away rights such as letting soldiers search colonists houses without reason. This resulted in the revolutionary war, because it showed the colonists that the British didn't respect them or the saying "no taxation without representation".
  • Boston Massacre

    After a mob of 50 patriots attacked a group of soldiers with snowballs, rocks and sticks, the group of soldiers fired into the crowd killing 3, and injuring 8, 2 of the injured later died as well. This conflict was caused by the growing presence of British troops in Boston. This led to the trial of the soldiers, in which only 2 were convicted, and the eviction of all British soldiers from Boston.
  • Tea Act

    This act was passed to give the East Indie Company the complete monopoly over the import of tea to help the financially struggling Britain. This led directly to the Boston tea party.
  • Boston Tea Party

    A group of patriots first public act against Britain. They dumped hundreds of pounds of tea into the harbor.This led to harsher taxes on the colonials and closer observation by the troops.
  • Intolerable acts

    A set of laws put in place to punish the colonists for their rebellious actions. This resulted in even more people turning against the crown as they saw these acts as them losing many of their rights,
