  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall plan supplied over $13 billion to finance the economic recovery of Europe between 1948 and 1951. It turned out to be a success, boosting the economic building process. It helped restore the confidence of European people in their economic future.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    This is the date when the soviets declared the Berlin Blockade. In response to this, the western powers organized a set of 278,228 flights to carry food,coal,passengers and other items and supplies to help themselves out. It was a complete success, which the soviets didnt expect.
  • NATO

    NATO
    In order to stop the expansion of communism, the United States and 11 other nations formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). These nations were hoping this would slow down or stop the spread of communism.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    75,000 North Koreans approached the 38th parallel or the boundary separating North and South Korea. The United States entered the war on South Korea's side. As far as they were concerned it was a war on communism. Three years later, over 5 million soldiers dead, the war came to an end. It appears that nothing was accomplished because the Koreas are still divided.
  • Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War was a long, bloody battle started in 1954 against the communist regime in northern Vietnam and their allies, the Viet Cong. The United States was allies with South Vietnam. In 1973 president Nixon withdrew his troops after 58,000 died. More than 3 million people died in this bloody confrontation. The Ho Chi MInh trail played a big part for the North to supply weapons, troops and aid to help defeat the south.
  • Warsaw Pact

    In response to the Nato agreement between the nations trying to bring communism to a hault, the soviet union and their communist partner nations created this alignment to help each other in the military standoffs within the cold war
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
    During the Cold War, the the Soviets and the United States were engaging in a space race. They were competing to see who would be more technologically advanced to prove some point I guess. So the Soviets launched Sputnik So on October 4th, 1957. An R-7 ballistic missile launched the worlds first artificial satellite and first man made object to enter earths orbit.
  • Castro Comes to Power

    After many years of attempts to overthrow the government of Cuba, Castro finally reached his goal. He overthrew General Fulgencio Batista and declared himself Prime Minister. The people of Cuba were worried about having a "dictator" type ruler. But he did become very popular due to the freee health care programs and education he offered.

    Khrushchev Visits United States
    Communist leader Nikita Khrushchev, visits the United States for a twelve day stay. He first meets with President Diwight D Eisenhower at Camp David. The two were trying to overcome the issues in the past and make amends.

    The CIA launched a full invasion of Cuba by cuban natives but the CIA trained these cubans to be fierce fighters and gave them a very special set of skills to overthrow Fidel Castro the Cuban dictator. But the soldiers surrendered after 24 hours because Castro outnumbered the american soldiers.
  • Berlin Wall Goes Up

    on August 13th 1961, East Germany constructed a barbed wire and concrete wall on the border of East and West Berlin. The purpose of this wall was to keep the fascists out of East Berlin. It was very common for people to try and get over the wall but these people would be executed by the guards.

    This was a 13 day political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear missiles brought forth by the soviets. On the 22nd, JFK spoke to the U.S informing them of the situation and made us aware that we were prepared to fight if neccesary to stop the missiles. US was going to invade Cuba but made a promise to the Soviets that they would not. therefore stopping the chances of nuclear warfare.

    Fall Of Berlin Wall
    On November 21st, the day after the fall of the Berlin Wall, George W meets with the Foreign Minister of West Germany, Hans-Dietrich Genscher. They met to discuss plans on the Reunification of Germany. Genscher brought Bush a piece of the Berlin Wall to show his gratitude. The actual Reunification of Germany took place shortly afterwards.

    On Christmas Day 1991, 11 of the Communist nations teamed with the soviets surrendered and declared themselves independent states. Because of this, the Soviet Union wasnt nearly as powerful causing the Cold War to take a quick turn....ending it and putting an end to the reign of the soviets.
