Shaping of Countries During the Cold War:

By EmileaB
  • Thesis - not a real event

During the 20th Century revolutions and changes in goverments led the changes, like changes in the way people are led, and continuties, like how some cultures or governments kept the same, there are more changes than continuties.
  • America "Helps" Japan

During this time after the war, America went and helped Japan go to a more democratic form of government. Japan had never had a democratic form of government, so the ideas were new to them. This shows change because the Japanese culture was being shaped by American influences, changing the views of some Japanese.
  • Mao Zedong in the People's Republic

Mao Zedong in the People's Republic
Mao's China became Communistic and changed the Chinese form of government, this shows change because the government imposed new reforms on land, people, and economy. started to kill off landlords to make a peasant population. This changed the area because for so long landlords were common and, although they hurt some peasants, they helped in the long run. Without landlords a part of Chinese culture was eliminated. (This happened in 1950-1952)
  • America stops occupying Japan

The Japanese were then able to have their own government the way they wanted without Americans interfering. Even though America stopped being directly involved, the Japanese were still shaped by the US, yet they still kept up some Japanese traditions. This can be an example of change because now the Japanese began to blend their old culture with the new US policies.
  • Korean War ends

The Korean War ended in a stalemate right around the original border of the two Korean countries. The two still had roughly the same type of government they started with once the war was over. North Korea was still communistic, this shows continuity because nothing changed within the governments' layouts between the two.
  • Egypt in a New Light

Nasser and the Free Officers started ruling over Egypt in a military government. This promotes change because there was a revolution that started the new government. The people did not want a monarchy in their country. Another reason why this is change is because it had been since the 6th century BCE since the Egyptians had ruled themselves.
  • Liberal Democratic party

The two top parties in Japan's government blended together and came up with their own party. The party held on to a traditional oligaric system when choosing its leader. The leaders were chosen by the elite, instead of the popular vote. This shows continuity because the Japanese were able to continue their system of government even after changes were put into place.
  • Ghana with Nkrumah

    Ghana with Nkrumah
Nkrumah came into power when Ghana was starting out as a new country. He started making the area a more dictorial country, something uncommon to the people of the area. The dictator rule was more aggressive; he had rival parties banned and arrested political leaders in the area. This was a large change to what the people were used to because various aspects of their life was being pulled away, they could not have a say in what was happening in their own country.
  • Elder Law

The Japanese still retained its traditional culture by passing laws using the new government system. This shows continuity because the Japanese continued to keep its values close to heart. This time they were able to pass laws to verify their traditions.
  • Singapore

In 1965 Singapore decided to break away into its own independent nation. Singapore was orginally controlled by the British, and the British were there until 197. This shows change because Sinapore had always been controlled by a third party and not by its own people per se. Now, in 1965, Singapore could make decisions for what was right for its people, this helped establish a culture to build off of for people in Singapore.
  • South Africa's First Elections!

    South Africa's First Elections!
South Africa had its first elections in 1994, the new president was Nelson Mandela, from the African National Congress party. This shows change because the government changed and allowed its first free vote, open to anyone.
