When Nixon became President, he was worried and talked to the Soviet Union about their ICBMs. He wanted to reduce them. After talking about it for three years, they both signed the SALT (Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty) treaty. It was important because ICBMs were dangerous and because we didn't have the best relationship with the Soviet Union. Reducing them was a good idea. -
The Munich Massacre was a horrible event. During the German Olympics, eight members of the terrorist group called Black September came and took 11 Israeli athletes hostage. Although the event only lasted 24 hours, all 11 athletes were found dead. It was significant to the cold war to show that there was still danger. Even though the war was cold, there were still some extremely violent events and it taught people that they were never safe. -
During the 1970s, people were opposing the Shah. This opposition was very common among the Shia Muslim leaders. This opposition lead to a one-year war called the Iranian revolution. This event is significant because it shows how delicate some political leaders can be. -
Iran was going through a lot. There was non-stop political turmoil and the Iran Hostage Crisis. Their neighbor, Iraq, decided to invade them. Although it was a surprise to Iran, it didn't go as well as they thought it would. This invasion led to an eight-year war called the Iran-Iraq War. This war was significant because it shows the constant fights people had. It also showed how desperate people were to expand back then.
