  • United Nations formed

    The United Nations formed in 1945 after the San Francisco conference. The United Nations included many nations and the goal was to maintain peace between the nations and prevent war. Even though it was president Roosevelt's idea to create the United Nations, the US did not join the United Nations.
  • Truman doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was a doctrine created by former president Truman. It first appeared when Truman gave a speech to congress seeking aid for Greece and Turkey. The Truman doctrine is known as the belief that other countries should be like the US and if communism is threatened to spread to other countries, the US would prevent them from becoming communist.
  • Hollywood 10

    The Hollywood 10 was a film which consisted of 10 film industry members who each gave a speech denouncing McCarthyism and refused to testify to an anti-communism committee.
  • Marshall plan

    Also known as the economic recovery act of 1948, was a plan to provide financial aid to western Europe in order to rebuild economies. The US hoped this would help prevent the spread of communism.
  • Nato formed

    NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO is comprised of many countries and its purpose was to protect peace in Europe and to counter and prevent the spread of communism and to protect these countries from the Soviet Union. NATO is an alliance between the countries that are in it.
  • Korean war

    The north and south sides of korea were at war with each other over opposing views of communism versus capitalism. The Soviet Union backed North Korea in support of communism and the United States backed South Korea in support of capitalism. Korea ended up splitting into North and South for good. The north is communist and the South is capitalist.
  • Space race

    The United States and the Soviet Union fought to go into space and to the moon first in order to show off their power and skill.
  • Bay of pigs

    The Bay of pigs invasion was a failed military landing operation on the southwestern coast of Cuba by Cuban exiles financed and directed by the United States and the goal was to overthrow Cuba's communist government.
  • Berlin wall goes up

    The Berlin wall separated east and west Berlin. The soviets took over the east part of Berlin and the west part of Berlin was known as the island of freedom because that side was not communist.
  • US officially enters vietnam war

    The US entered the Vietnam War in order to prevent the spread of communism. The US was afraid that if South Vietnam became communist, then communism would spread to the rest of the world. The US supported South Vietnam and the Soviet Union supported North Vietnam.
  • Soviets invade afghanistan

    The Soviet union invaded Afghanistan to support the pro-Soviet government that had been installed.
  • Berlin wall comes down

    The Berlin wall that separated east and west Berlin came down because the GDR announced that people could cross the border whenever they wanted.
