  • Six Years Old

    Ned Begay has just arrived at his new mission school in or around the 1930's. (p.12). He meets other Navajo children. Ned realizes that he must not speak his Navajo language any longer, but instead learn to speak English. This is very shocking to the children. Ned is only six years old.
  • Six Years Old, #2

    Ned Begay has his hair cut, is given new clothes to wear, and has his Navajo name changed to an American name ( Kii Yazhi --> Ned Begay). (Chpt. 3)
  • Fourteen Years Old

    Ned Begay is only fourteen years old at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. (p.35-37)
  • Fifteen Years Old

    Ned Begay wants permission to enlist as a Marine, to help America fight Japan, Germany, and Italy. Only Navajo indians fluent in both English and Navajo can enlist. Neds parents tell him to wait another winter. (P. 43-44)
  • Fifteen Years Old

    Ned waits patiently for the upcoming winter to arrive so that he may enlist as a Marine.
  • Sixteen Years Old

    Ned is sixteen years old now, and is signing up for the Marines. This occurs sometime in early 1943. (P. 50)
  • Sixteen Years Old

    Ned is still sisteen and graduated from boot camp most likely in the summer of 1943. After this, Ned and the other Navajo marines were taken to Camp Elliot, which is a little north of San Diego. There thery all learned that they were to become secret code talkers in the second World War.

    Ned and the other Navajo marines drilled getting off the ships in Guadalcanal, and tried to always expect the unexpected. Soon, they would all be ready for battle.
  • Seventeenth Birthday.

    Neds seventeenth birthday was on November tenth, 1943. (p. 126)
  • D-day for Bougainville.

    November eleventh was d-day for Bougainville. (p. 127)
  • Seventeen Years Old

    Next objectives include Saipan, Guam, Peleliu, Tinian, then Japan. (p. 141)
  • Hiroshima is Bombed.

    On August sixth, 1945, the United States sent and dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city, Hiroshima. More than 70,000 people died, but this bomb and another bomb dropped on Nagasaki allowed America to finally win and conclude the World War Two. (p. 205)
  • Japan Surrenders.

    On August 15th, 1945, Japan finally surrendered. America had finally won! Ned Begay, along with a lot of other Marines, were very excited and danced around all night! (p. 206)
  • Neds Career.

    After another incident after coming back home, Ned decides he is going to become a teacher, and make sure that his and others' stories will never be forgotten. Ned makes sure that his sacred language and Navajo people will never be forgotten. (p. 211)
  • Code Talkers become Public.

    "Finally, in 1969, we were told that we could speak about being code talkers. New computers were more efficient than people in sending and recieving code. Our story was declassified." (p. 213)
  • Seventy-Six Years Old

    Ned Begay is old, and telling his story. He is looking back to when he was only sixteen, and signing up for the Marines. (P. 55)
