In the 1880’s the cow herding industry boomed in the Central United States. The Cowboys would move the cattle to allow them to graze on the vast plains. This led to over grazing, the boom of the US cattle industry, and the furthe settlement of the country. -
Sun Dance Out Lawed by Government
The Sundance was outlawed by the US government. The sundance was a religious cerrmony that included the peircing of the chest, back, or arms, as well as fasting, praying, and smoking. The government chose to prohibit it because they saw it as torture and unchristian. -
Dawes Severalty Act Native Assimilation and Citizenship
The Dawes Severlaty Act partitioned land for native Americans with the hope that they would adopt American farming practice. The policy would give them land and the tools for citizenship. -
Oklahoma Land Run (Sooners)
The Oklahoma land rush becomes the first land run into unassigned areas of the country. At noon on April 22 50,000 people raced to get some of the 2 million acres. -
Wovoka - Ghost Dance Outlawed
The ghost dance, a religious movement, was outlawed because the United States government saw it as a threat because it focused on the restoration of land to the Native Americans. -
Murder of Sitting Bull
The murder of the resistant Indian chief sitting bull who helped Crazy Horse defeat General Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn. He was killed in an attempted arrest. All this would trigger more violence in the coming months. -
Wounded Knee Massacre
The massacre at wounded knee was the final conflict in the Indian War. It ended with the killing of 150 Native Americans.
