    The Cheyenne and Kiowas indian tribes were in the Palo DUro gathering food and supplies for winter. Colonel Ranald S Mackenzie planned a surprise attack on the tribes. One of Mackenzies scouts spotted them and they gathered around the top of the canyon. A leader of the tribe spotted them and shot a warning. Then Mackenzie and his troops came down and killed them all
