  • South Carolina Votes to Secede from the United States

    South Carolina Votes to Secede from the United States
    South Carolina, a slave state, took matters of problems with slavery into their own hands. Giving the reason of "increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the Institution of Slavery" for them to secede from the United States. When the proposition was brought to vote it was 169-0 to secede from the United States.
  • Jefferson Davis Elected President of the Confederacy

    Jefferson Davis Elected President of the Confederacy
    On November 6, 1861 Davis ran to be the Confederate States of America's President. He ran unopposed and was supposed to run a six year term but instead ran a 4 year term, due to the war ending.

    One of the deadliest battles of the Civil War. Showed that the Union was able to stand its ground against the Confederates.

    The Battle of Fredericksburg, near Fredericksburg VA, was one of the largest and deadliest battles fought throughout the war, with nearly 200,000 soldiers there fighting. This was a push by the Union in order to get into Richmond VA, the capital of the Confederacy. Sadly, the Union experienced a large amount of casualties to the South.

    A major step forward in abolishing slavery. In the third year of the Civil War it announced "that all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free." Officially putting an end to Slavery in the Nation.

    Gettysburg, remembered as one of the most important and bloodiest battles between Union and Confederate soldiers. This took place in Gettysburg PA, and was fought in an effort to stop the Confederates advances North, which the Union stopped. This battle also posed as the way to avoid Europe from getting involved with the war. This battle, despite it being bloody and many lives being lost was a much needed victory for the Union, as for it boosted morale and gave them faith in the war again.

    After the Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln arrived to give a short speech. In this speech he acknowledged the sacrifice and bravery of the brave Union soldiers, who without, the battle would have been lost.

    Near the end of the Civil War, Lincoln easily defeated George McClellan with 55% popular vote. This allowed for Lincoln to run for another term.

    After the Civil War, a confederate supporter and famous actor, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Lincoln. Lincoln was sitting in Ford's Theater when he was suddenly shot in the back of the head.
