The Election of 1860 was the presidential election in which Abraham Lincoln was elected and won. The North liked the fact that Lincoln was the president but the South was against it. The South didn't like the idea of Lincoln being the president because they were afraid that Lincoln would make laws to abolish slavery. Due to the fact that the South was against Lincoln's presidency, the Southern states decided to secede from the federal Union. The first state to secede was South Carolina. -
The Confederate states formed due to Lincoln becoming president and the South was against it. South Carolina was the first state to secede then 6 more states seceded including Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and TX, then VA, AR, TN, and NC to threatened secession. In February of 1861 representatives from 6 states met in Alabama where they came up with the name of the Confederate States of America. February 9th of 1861 Jefferson Davis was the first Confederacy president. -

April 12, 1861 was when forces from the Confederate States of America attacked the U.S. military garrison at Fort Sumter. Due to this, the Union forces surrendered less than 2 days later. Sherman's March to Sea was a campaign for the American Civil War that lasted from November 15 to December 21, 1864. General William Tecumseh Sherman led troops through Georgia which was a Confederate state. While he led them into Georgia they were pillaging the countryside and destroyed the military outposts and the civilian properties. The Appomattox Courthouse is a little village in Virginia where Robert E. Lee had surrendered his army. The surrender of Lee ended the bloodiest conflict in American history (Civil War), which went on for 4 years. Lee surrendered because he didn't want any more unnecessary destruction to continue/happen in the South. -
Lincoln was assassinated while attending a performance at Ford's Theatre by Wilkes Booth. Booth learned that Lincoln would be there so he decided to get behind Lincoln while he was sitting, pull a gun to the back of his head, and shoot. Booth did this because he was a supporter of slavery and Lincoln had created The 13th Amendment which abolished slavery. Booth thought that Lincoln was trying to overthrow the Constitution and destroy the South.
