Civil War Timeline

  • Louisiana Purchase

When President Thomas Jefferson purchased 13 states from France and added them to the US. Lewis & Clark were sent by Jefferson to explore the land since they didn't know it too well. Because of Jefferson's purchase, this set a precedent for future leaders. One of the main reasons this event was important because now the US had control over the Mississippi River which helped them with trading and economic stability.
  • Missouri Compromise

when this event took place, it was because Missouri was admitted as another slave state with Maine coming in as a free state. Even though slavery was a big issue and was constantly spreading, it could only go but so far because of the 36'30" line. Before any of this even happened, the amount of free and slave state were already balanced but because they wanted to come in, this made it important because they threatened that.
  • Monroe Doctorine

Written by President James Monroe as a way or warning natives to not colonize in Latin Am. This document was also written as a basis for future presidents. The reason this all came about was because Great Britain had strong trades with Latin American countries. British encouraged the US to go against native Americans colonizing which is why this was important.
  • Nullification Crisis

A document that declared that the states had the right to declare a federal law or tax them if it harmed the states. After the nullification crisis, a protective tariff was placed on the south, which then angered them. The problems with individual's rights continued and constantly grew which caused tension between the North and South. The importance of this is basically how bad the south wanted their independence/rights and to be equal.
  • Texas Annexation

Americans in Mexico controlled the territory of Texas but was then outlawed. The US then acquired the Republic of Texas which was why they were annexed. this meant that the land (texas) was added to the states after a while. This event was important because for so long they didn't want to add them because they wanted to keep the balance of slave and free states equal.
  • Oregon Treaty

They were jointly occupied and claimed by Americans, British, and Spanish. The tension between the British & Americans led to negotiations. they also supported "54'40 or Fight" which was basically a fight over territory with the British. This was important because it helped them to decide who got it because of the tension leading up to the war.
  • Mexican Cession

This territory was made up of most of the southern US which were acquired by the US. The treaty acquired was what ended the Mexican-American war. This event also ended Manifest Destiny when they gave Americans control of the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
  • Compromise of 1850

it introduced the idea of popular sovereignty, which said that the people are the ones who vote slave issues. California was also mad a free state. All runaway slaves had to be returned from the north which was said by the fugitive slave law that was put into place. The Compromise of 1850 was important because it did not help the situation of the slaves in the south, if anything it made it worse for them.
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

It was basically said when Stephen Douglas proposed popular sovereignty, it would be determined whether or to states would be slave or free. The Missouri Compromise was overturned because of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Because of this event, it lead to Bleeding Kansas, which makes the act important because of the fact that it plays a big role in certain events and impacts a lot of lives.
  • Bleeding Kansas

This even occurred because there was tension between those who were pro-slavery vs. those who were anti-slavery. This then turned into a really violent conflict, which is how it got its name.
  • Battle of Bull Run

A battle that took place at Bull Run Creek outside of Manassa, Virginia, and ran by General Irvin McDowell. In the beginning, the Union troops had a bigger advantage but not for long. Because of this, the war took longer to end than expected. As a way of hopefully getting a victory, Lincoln decided to replace the original general, McDowell, with McClellan. The reason that this battle was so important was because people wanted it to end to stop any more damage from being done.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

This battle started because the confederate forces fired on the Union. The economic resources, geographic factors, and political leadership was dependent upon the Civil War.
  • Battle of Antietam

A battle that took place at Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland. This battle was led by General George McClellan and was the bloodiest day of the war. It was also the first southern invasion into the North. This came to Lincoln's advantage because he now had a reason to pull through with the Emancipation Proclamation. It was a top priority that this battle came to an end because it caused so much damage and impacted people badly.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

This war was a union victory that took place in Vicksburg, Mississippi, which was led by General Ulysses S. Grant. The surrender of Vicksburg split the Confederacy in two. It was also the key turning point in the western theatre which is why it is important.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

This battle took place in 1863 and was also a union victory that took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which was led by General George G. Meade. This event took place because Lee retreated to Virginia and the south wanted to invade the North. The soldiers were at an advantage because of the way the land was set up, they could have easily snuck up on them which made it important.
  • Gettysburg Address

This event took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and was led by Abraham Lincoln. It was held as an honor for those who lost their lives, fighting for others. The importance of this was because it was hard for independence to be declared. It was said that all men were created equal but this wasn't the case because they had no rights.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

A document that was announced as a "military measure" against the Confederacy. This document basically said that anyone who is being held against their will or working as a slave shall be set free. The Emancipation Proclamation is mostly made for the southerners because they were the ones that had the most trouble when it came to having rights and independence. The document is important because it basically gave African Americans back their independence and helped with their rights.
  • 13th Amendment

This amendment ended slavery which was the key point in why it was so important. African Americans were fighting for their lives and this helped in their favor. those opposed to the freedom of African Americans refused to recognize them for who they were, which were citizens, not slaves. this is when black codes came about also.
  • 14th amendment

When this amendment was established, it gave all people who were born in the US birthright and were declared citizens. The main reason it was established was to declare independence for African Americans. They felt as if their rights weren't recognized and weren't as equal as everyone else. Basically, the main importance of this amendment was to highlight and declare citizenship for African Americans. Because of this, the Dred Scott case was overturned.
  • 15th amendment

Men's right to vote came about when this amendment was established. It was important because a lot of people's rights were limited during this time so now their voting rights were set in place. It was only for men, desired by the Republican party. This was important because this was their way of improving the South and giving them more rights
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

This court case came about when the issue of discrimination was a major issue. Established by the Supreme Court, they said that even though whites and African Americans were separate, everyone was claimed to be equal. Segregation was the reason for this case because African Americans were the main ones being mistreated but nothing was being done about it. What made it important was that their rights were slowly improving but not every issue was being fixed. "Separate but equal" is what they said
