  • Fort Sumter

    When South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860, the United States Major Robert Anderson and 85 troops were positioned near Fort Moultrie near Charleston Harbor. On December 26, Anderson moved his army to Fort Sumter. On April 11, 1861 Confederate General P.G.T Beauregaurd sent dispatched aids to Major Anderson demanding his surrender,Anderson refused.The next morning Confederate forces opened fire on Anderson and his troops.On April 13, the Union surrendered. A Confederate win
  • Bull Run

    This was the first major land battle of the armies in Virginia. On July 16, 1861 the Union, under the command of Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the Confederate army, which was drawn up behind Bull Run beyond Centreville. On the 21st McDowell crossed at Sudley Ford and attacked the Confederate. By July 22, the shattered Union army reached the safety of Washington. The Comfederate won this battle.
  • Monitor vs. Merrimack

    The Confederate's goal was to interdict naval operations in Hampton Roads. The Confederate was under the command of Franklin Buchanan. The Confederate attacked and sank the USS Cumberland. When the CSS Virginia fired at the USS Congress the Confederat's General was shot, forcing the Confederate army to retreat. The battle lasted for 1 day, March 8-9,1862. There were 7 killed on the Confederate's side, and 261 killed on the Union's side.
  • Battle of Richmond

    The Confederate general was Kirby Smith, while the Union's general was William Nelson. The Confederate moved north from the Big Hill to attack the Union. The Union and Confederate briefly, that night Manson informed his superior of the situation. Nelson ordered a brigade to match to Rogersville. The Confederate captured 4,000 Yankees. It was a Confederate win. The battle lasted for 1 day, August 29-30 1862. There were 4,900 Union soldiers killed and 750 Confederate soldiers killed.
  • Antietam

    The army of the Potomac, under the command of George McClellan (Union general), attacked Robert E. Lee's army near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17,1862. They fought back and forth. Later on, towards the center of the battlefield , the Union assaulted the Confederate center, causing tack federate forces to retreat. The result is inconclusive. There were a total of 22,717 casualties, the Union had 12,401 and the Cinfederate had 10,316 casualties. The battle lasted for 2 days, September 16-18
  • Fredericksburg

    On Nov, 14, Burnside, the command of the Potomac Army, sent a corps to occupy Falmouth near Fredericksburg. Lee reacted by placing his army behind the town. On December 13th Burnside mounted a series of futile assault on Prospect Hill. Union general Jackson and Bayard were killed along with the Confederate generals Cobb and Gregg. The Confederate won. The battle lasted for four days- December 11-15 1862.
  • Vicksburg

    In May and June of 1863, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's armies converged on Vicksburg, trapping the Confederate. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered. With the loss of the Confederate army, the Confederate was effectively split in half. The Union won this battle. May 18- July 4 1863
  • Gettysburg

    Having concentrated his army around the small town of Gettysburg, PA. Gen. Robert E. Lee awaited the approach of Union general George G. Meade's forces. On July 1, Union success faltered as Confederate forces pushed back against the iron forces. The next day Lee struck the Union flanks leading to heavy battles at Devil's Den, Little Round Top, The Wheatfield, and Oeach Orchard. An estimated 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded captured or missing. The Union won.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman was a contradiction embodied. He moved the few people remaining in the city about 10% of the 20,000, out of the area. On November 15 62,000 men split into two infantry wings. Two months after capturing Atlanta, Sherman was ready to move out and and strip the city of its military infrastructures. This freed all his troops for the upcoming movement. Major General William Tecumseh Sherman won.
