The attack was a sucess and Hooker was forced to retreat but Jackson was killed by freindly fire. Lee said losing Jackson was like losing his right arm. The battle a strong Confederate victory .

The battle grew into the largest battle of the war, lasting 3 days, and creating over 46,000 casualties on both sides. It was amajor victory and is believed to be the turning point of the war.

Again instead of retreating the Union advanced while the Confederates were ground down by casulaties the could afford.
