The election of 1860 is when Abraham Lincoln became president. South California was unhappy and threatened to leave because Abraham Lincon said he would free all the slaves. It's significant because this led to South California leaving the Union. -
South Carolina decided to secede after Abraham Lincoln won the election because he said that he would free slaves and they took that as a threat. So they seceded and this soon led to war because Abraham Lincoln wanted to keep them as a union and they wanted to be left alone but they kept trying to bring them back so it led to war. -
The Fort Sumter attacked started the Civil War to start. The Confederate States of America attacked Fort Sumter before the Union ships arrived. -
The Battle of Bull Run/Manassas was the first conflict that happened. The Union wanted to capture the South's capital because the anaconda plan was taking too long and wanted to speed things up. The Battle of Bull Run/Manassas changed the way the north saw the was because they were shocked that the confederates won. -
The Antietam was the bloodiest day of the war. McClellan could've followed Lee and end the war but he didn't and Lincoln fired him for that. The Antietam was the first major win for the North and after the Antietam, Lincoln sees it as a chance to capitalize on victory and issues the Emancipation proclamation. -
After Lincoln fires McLellan he hired General Burnside and he decides to try and take Richmond. In the Battle of Fredericksburg, the confederate won and leaves a devastating loss for the Union. It leaves a devastating loss for the Union because they had more people and they still lost. -
The Emancipation Proclamation was the day Lincoln freed all slaves. Although some people did not see it as the day as all slaves got free because Lincoln only freed the slaves in the Confederate states. During the Emancipation Proclamation, it declared that African-American willing to fight in the army will be received into the armed service of the United States -
General Ulysses S. Grant won important victories in the west. Vicksburg was the last stronghold of the Confederates in the Mississipi River. The anaconda plan was finally fulfilled. -
The Battle of Gettysburg took 3 days and it was fought on a rocky hill and field the Union had the higher ground. The Union was victorious because 1/3 of Lee's army was killed and he went back to Virginia. This was also a turning point because it was the last time Lee and the Confederacy ever invaded the North. -
54th Massachusetts Fight at Fort Wagner led the most famous black regiment. -
The Gettysburg Address was Abraham Lincoln's most famous speech it was short but it's still famous. Lincoln went to Gettysburg to say a speech at the dedication for all the soldiers who died buried there, When he gave that speech he was hoping that they still believe in them. -
The Sherman’s March to the Sea was where "total war" was. Total war was not just them against the enemy but to anything that supported them. Meaning that he burned down trail wracks, crops, and houses. It was called Sherman’s March to the Sea because he burned everything down until he was to the sea. -
The 13th Amendment was to end slavery permanently. Sadly it got passed on after Lincoln got assassinated. Although the 13th Amendment said that the only time it's only okay to punish them if they commit a crime. But at last, all the slaves were free on this day. -
The South told the Grant that they're ready to surrender and meet up with them on 4/08/1865 at, Appomattox courthouse. Grant let them off without any punishment because his goal was to stop fighting and return home.
