    This will forever change the course of history. This made the last straw for the south. They did not want a republican president who did not want slavery expanding.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    South Carolina leaved the union as a result of Abraham lincoln becoming president, aggravated by his beliefs in slavery, South Carolina left the Union and influenced the other southern states as well.
  • Confederacy is formed

    Confederacy is formed
    After the secession of South Carolina this lead to more beliefs about the south should form their own country. So, after one year later the southern states began to leave one at a time and eventually form the C.S.A.

    This first inauguration for Lincoln was very dangerous. There was still many people who disliked Lincoln. There was even plots to assassinate Lincoln. But despite all this hatred Abraham Lincoln was ready and looking forward to bringing the country back together.
  • Attack at Ft. Sumter

    Tensions were high after the secession of the southern states. General Anderson moved his men from the mouth of Charleston Bay to Ft. Sumter. Only 85 men were there. The south was angered by the presence of the enemy in their territory. So general Bauregard opened fire after Anderson refused to surrender and the fort was taken. This skirmish was the last straw for both sides and war would soon come.

    This was the first battle of the civil war. Picknickers came to watch the battle from Washington D.C and when the union retreated they found out the war was not going to be easy. This was fought near Bull Run Creek in Manassas, Va.
  • Seven days battle

    This was a deadly series of mini battles over seven days. It was a disaster for the union. Lee kept doing offensive assaults on the union.After fort Henry and Fort Donelson won by the union they thought they could also manage to take Richmond. But this turned out to be disastourous for the union and they retreated from around Richmond. The war would drag on for three more years.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    This battle was one of the biggest battles in the western theatre. Many misunderstood how important winning this battle was. The union wanted to split the confederacy in half. They wanted to accomplish this by taking Corinth, Mississippi, a major supply center and railroads but the union was unaware of the amount of confederates in Shiloh.
  • Battle of Manasasas 2

    Battle of Manasasas 2
    Once again near Bull run Creek a secon battle happened 13 months later. Jackson and Pope's armies clashed and there was a stalemate for a while. But, when Longstreet came in everything changed. The union's left flank was crushed and a repeat of the first battle almost happened. Eventually the Union retreated back to Maryland. This showed an invasion of Virginia was going to be hard.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The bloodiest single day in the Civil War, this battle happened near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The union had many casualties and about 2,000 more than the confederates even though fighting on their home turf. The confederates did retreat but no clear winner was made. But since the rebels retreated Abraham Lincoln declared it a victory and gave him the oppertunity to pass the Emancipation Proclomation.

    This said that if the southern states did not join back into the union the slaves would be freed. But this did not include the border states or states occupied by union troops. Also the slaves in the southern states could join and fight in the Union army.
  • Battle of Fredricksburg

    Once again the Union and Confederates engage in a fight in Virginia. The union wanted to win to take Richmond. But this battle was a bloodbath for the union. The union had 13,000 casualties and the confederate only 4,500, this was a great victory for the confederates to halt union progress in Va.

    This battle secured middle Tennessee for the Union. Unable to have any progress in the eastern campaign, Stones River in Murfreesboro,Tn was a confidence booster for the Union.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    In Spotsylvania County, Va Hooker trained his army into very good, prepared troops. But, with Lee and Jackson's plan it turned out to be a defeat for the union. The army in northern Virginia split into two and suffocated the Union army. But Stonewall Jackson was killed.

    With this successful campaign the confederacy was split in half because Grant now had control of the Mississippi.This gave Ulysses S. Grant an even better reputation and a promotion.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Robert. E. Lee was ready for an invasion in the north again. After the victory at Chancellorsville he and his army felt very confident. He thought if he got this victory this would persuade people in the north to want peace. But this was not the case. In Gettysburg, Pa, the confederates had a huge number of casualties. This was the bloodiest battle of the war and this is where Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Adress.
  • Battle of Chickamauga

    Battle of Chickamauga
    This was an important battle that repulsed Rosecran's entering Georgia. This would allow Bragg's men to try and take back the city of Chattanooga. This was a very bloody battle and had the highest casualties of the western theatre. This took place in Catoosa and Walker County Georgia.
  • Gettysburg Adress

    Gettysburg Adress
    A 273 word speech that was very memorable and was dedicated towards the men who died on the battlefield that day. It talked about equality and that's what the declaration of Independence was about equality. This also said it is up to the living to preserve the union and the government for the people.
  • Battle of Chattanooga

    This was a battle that took place at the vital railroads in Chattanooga, Tn. This was a key city for which would allow an invasion of Georgia. Ulysses successfully defended the city at look out Moutain and Missionary Ridge and resulted in Bragg to retreat.

    Confederate victory and boosted confederate morale. This took place in Virginia.

    The people really trust him because he was able to come through during the Civil War. Even though it's not over he has showed he is capable of winning major military battles.

    This was much more than just burning towns and land. This was mostly a campaign to burn major storages of weapons, ammunition, and anything that helped the confederacy. This was led by William T. Sherman and this happened all throughout Georgia and was devastating for the Confederacy.

    The battle of Franklin was the bloodiest five hours of the Civil War. It also decimated the Tennessee army. This took place in Franklin, Tn.

    The campaign is over and Atlanta a major storage city for the rebels was captured. Brings the Union a lot closer to wars end.

    This put an end to the Northern Virginia army. There was still rebels to be fought but the army of Northern Virginia was the strongest.

    Lincoln finally pulled the country together agin and then shortly after he was shot. He made a huge contribution to the equality of blacks.

    All the bloodshed is finally over. A tremendous amount people have died in this war. The nation was torn apart and could have been forever if the union didn't win. The sacrifices they made was not for nothing.
