  • South Carolina secedes from the Union.

    Two months after Abraham Lincolns election, South Carolina secedes from the Union.

  • The First Attack from the Confederate.

    At 4:30 a.m. Confederate solders attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The Civil War begins.

  • Virginia secedes from the Union.

    Virginia secedes from the Union followed within five weeks by Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

  • President Lincoln issues General War Order No.

    President Lincoln calls for all United States naval and land forces to begin a general advance by February 22.

  • The Fredericksburg battle is over.

    Army of the Potomac under Gen. Burnside is defeated at Fredericksburg.

  • The Tides Have Turned for the South.

    The tide of war turns against the South as the Confederates are defeated at the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania.

  • The Union attacks the last Confederate stronghold.

    Vicksburg, on the Mississippi River, surrenders to Gen. Grant and the Army of the West after a six week siege.

  • Gen. Grant is the new commander of the Union.

    President Lincoln appoints Gen. Grant to command all of the armies of the United States.

  • The war is over and the Union has won.

    Remaining Confederate forces surrender. The Nation is reunited as the Civil War ends. Over 620,000 Americans died in the war, with disease killing twice as many as those lost in battle.
