  • Elections of 1860

    Elections of 1860
    This event was about the elections of 1860. The people running for president were Lincoln (republican), Douglass (democrat), Breckenridge (southern democrat), and John bell (constitutional union). Lincoln won the election not by popular vote but by electoral votes. This was also the last straw for the Southerners because Lincoln didn’t want to mess with slavery. So this was the start to future conflict.
  • Confederate States form

    Confederate States form
    This event was about some of the southern states seceding from the United States and becoming the Confederate states of america. The states that broke away from the U.S. were Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. 4 more states were also part of the confederacy but they never broke away, these states were North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Arkansas. This all happened before Lincoln moved into office.

    On November 6, 1861 Jefferson Davis was elected president of the confederate states. He was the first and only president of the confederate states. Montgomery was where he was elected and it was also the first confederate capital.
  • Fort Sumter

    This battle was fought on Fort Sumter, South carolina. This was the first battle and official beginning of the civil war. No one died in the battle but shots were fired. The south were the attackers and won the battle because Fort Sumter surrendered.
  • First battle of Bull Run

    This battle was a deadly one like all the battles in the civil war. It showed soldiers that the war would be longer and deadly. It started as Licoln ordered an attack on the confederates. It failed because the south ended up victorious in that battle and forced the Union to retreat.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    This battle was the Union's victory. The union took control of the Mississippi River which was bad for the Confederates. The confederates were not able to hold their place in the battle and soon fell. There were about 23,000 deaths in this battle which made it one of the bloodiest battles.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Also known as the battle of Sharpsburg, this battle was a threat to the Union because it was in Maryland which is close to Washington D.C. It was a bloody battle against the south and north. The north ended up winning.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    A law that president Lincoln made which made slaves in the confederate states free. This made millions of slaves happy and free and some went on to fight for the Union. Although the slaves in the south were free, the Union states that still had slaves weren’t free. This was so the slaves wouldn’t turn against them for the time being of the civil war.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Battle of Vicksburg
    This battle was an important Victory for the Union. It was fought for the Mississippi river. It gave the Union the supply line to the south. So when they got control they could cut off supply to the south, making them struggle more. This was part of the success of the Anaconda plan for the Union.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    This battle took place in Pennsylvania. The Union won the battle. It had the most deaths out of any other battle in the civil war. It was also the turning point of the war because the south had been losing the major battles and people had seen that the south was on a decline.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Led by William Sherman, he led troops through the confederate states. This was very destructive to the south because the troops would take supplies and burn down everything in the way. The south was already struggling because they had their supplies cut off and they were losing their money and on top of that the little supplies they had, were being burned down with the cities.

    The court house battle took place in a small village in Virginia On April 9, 1865. Robert E Lee, the general of the confederate states surrendered. He saw that if the war kept up, he would lose more men for no reason because he was already heading down the losing path. This day was the beginning of peace in the United States.

    After the south had lost the civil war everything had seemed fine for the Union. That was until on April 15, 1865 in Ford’s theater, John Wilkes Booth shot president Lincoln. He was taken to a place across the theater by soldiers. And passed away in the Petersen’s boarding house at 7:22 am.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    The 13th amendment was to make slavery be gone in the United states. All the states had to get rid of slaves except when someone is convicted of a crime. This means that prisoners can work for the prison without any pay. Other than that slaves were happy because they were freemen and didn’t have to be put in these harsh conditions.
