  • Missouri Compromise

    This was where they (the states) decided that Missouri was a slave state and Maine was a free state. It was also said that all new states above 36' 30' would be free and below would be slave states.
  • Compromise of 1850

    This was another idea on solving the slave state vs free state thing. It was decided that California was a free state, no more slave trade in Washington D.C., and popular sovereignty was to be used in Mexican Cession.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    This law was passed mainly for the South that stated that when escaped slaves went to the North, the South could capture them and take them with them.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    This is where the US Supreme decided that slaves were property of their masters and NOT considered US citizens. Slaves could also be taken anywhere with their masters, including free states.

    John Brown's Raid

    John Brown was an abolitionist that tried to steal weapons from arevanel at Harper's Ferry to help slaves revolt. He was unfortunately, captured and executed. This showed how far some abolitionists were willing to go for their cause.
  • Election of 1860

    The election of 1860 divided the county and Lincoln won. South thought that Lincoln would abolish slavery, which was false ( he only wanted to stop the expansion of slaves). South seceded by creating the Conferate States of America.

    Fort Sumter

    This is where the Civil War begins and the last fort controlled by the Union. The Conferates fired upon the fort and where the FIRST SHOTS of the Civil War.
  • Battle of Antietnam

    The battle of Antietnam took place in Maryland and was the 1st major of Civil War on Northern soil. Neither side really won, but was seen as "strategic victory" for the North. It was the bloodiest single day battle in US History and led to the Emancipation Proclamtion.
  • Emancipation Proclamtion

    This was document made in 1862 and written by Lincoln. He declared that slaves in Confederates states were free and made the Civil War about a moral case... Freeing the slaves.

    Battle of Chancellonsville

    This battle took place near Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virgina. It was a Confederate victory and there was 17,000 Union casualties. Known as "Lee's perfect victory" and was the death of General Stonewall Jackson.

    Battle of Vickesburg

    This battle took place in Vicksburg, Mississippi and was in 1863. General Grant captured the city and the Union controlled part of the Mississippi River. Union cut off supplies to Confederate troops.

    Battle of Gettysburg

    This battle took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July, 1863. The Union troops defeated General Lee's troops ending Confederate invasion of the North. TURNING POINT OF THE CIVIL WAR! This was also the last time Confederates tried to invade the North and was also the bloodiest battle of the war.
  • Gettysburg Address

    The Gettysburg Address was a famous speech made by Lincoln in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This speech was given in honor of all men who died at the Battle of Gettysburg. This reminded people of the true goal of the war .... Preserve the Union.
  • Battle of Atlanta

    This is where General Sherman took his troops to Atlanta on July 1864. He first evacuated the population then burned the city to the ground. He also cut off supplies to the Confederate troops and was the major victory for the Union.
  • Appomattox Courthhouse, Virginia

    This was the meeting between General Lee and General Grant. Lee surrendered to the Grant and the Union was preserved! THE END!!!
