    Abraham Lincoln was elceted president of novemebr of 1860. No one thought that lincoln was going to win because he had controversial opionins on slavery. And the south did not like lincoln because he wanted to abolish slavery in the south. Abraham Lincoln thought that he wasnt goign to win because the votes were against him through out the whole election.
  • Secession of South Carolina

    Secession of South Carolina
    On the day of December 20 , 1860 South Carolina succeded from the union. After south carolina succeded from the union more states started to leave the union too. a year later after south carolina succeded from the union a number off states did the same. For example, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. And then after Abraham Lincol's first inaugural adress more states left the union like Fort sumter Arkansas, North carolinia, Tennessee, and virginia sucdeced.

    The seven most southern states had seceded and formed the confederate states and army. The confederate soliders immediately began taking over federal installatiosn. For example, courthouses, and forts. By the time of Lincoln's inauguration only two southern forst were in the unions hands. The most important fort was south carolinia's fort sumter. the day after his inaugurtation the new president received an urgent dispatch that the confederacy was demanding the he surrender or face attack.

    Lincoln created a clever political plan to get around the demands of the Confederate's Demands. he isnt going to abandon Fort Sumter, but neither reinforce it. he would send in food for hungry men. now it was davis who faced the dilemma of if he did nothing then he would damage the image of the confederacys sovereign. but he did something then he would turn peaceful secession into war. jefferson davis chose war at 4:30 A.M. on April 12. The charleston poeple started cheering.

    the first major bloodshed occured on july 21 about three months after forst sumter fell.30,000 inexperienced union soliders were heading for richmond but came upon and equally amount of inexperienced confederate army. at the little creek of bull run, just 25 miles from the union capital. lincoln commanded general Mcdowell to attack. but in the afternoon the confederate army got reinforcements and that was the first victory for the south.
  • Forts Henry and Donelson

    Forts Henry and Donelson
    in february of 1862 in just 11 days general grant forces captured two confederate forts that held strategic poistions on important rivers. Fort henry is on the tennessee river and Fort Donelson is on the river cumberland. the southern commanders were imformed by general grant that no terms except immediate surrender
  • Shiloh

    on april 6 thousands of confederate soliders surprised the union nsoldiers. many union troops were shot while making their coffee. grant reorginized his troops and ordered reinforcements and counterattacked at dawn the following day. that mid afternoon confederate forces retreated. 100,000 troops were killed, wounded, or captured that day.

    As grant pushed forward to the mississippi river a fleet of 40 ships approached the rivers mouth in louisiana. the commander Farragut assinment is to seize new orleans the busiest and largest city for the confederacy.during nthe next two months he took control of Baton Rouge and Natchez.

    the union navy tighten its blockade on the southern ports. the third part of the norths three-part strategy-the plan to capture nthe confederate capital at richmond faltered.one of the problems was general McClean because he was to caustious. he complained that there were only two bridges across the potomac.

    on august 29 and 30 his troops won adn resounding victory at the second battle of bull run. and then McClean had a lucky streak because he founds lee armys orders wrapped in cigars. the clash was the bloodest single day battles in american history.

    the proclamtaion did not free any slaves immediately because it applied only to areas behind confederate lines outside union control. the proclamation was a military action aimed at the states rebellion and didnt applie to to southern territories already occupied by the union troops nor to slaves states that had not secceded

    Both armies origanally relied on volunteers but then the heavy casualties and widespread of desertion thought otherwise.the confederacy passed the draft in 1862 and the union soon followed and passed it in 1863. the confederate law said that all able bodies white man between the ages of 18-35. and the union's law said white men ages 20-45 for three years and it drafted that able to hire subsitutes.
  • Gettysburg

    buford orfered his men to take the defensive postion on the hills and ridges around the town. the shooting attracked more troops and each side need reinforcement. the confederates took control of the town. on july 2 almost 90,000 yankees and 75,000 confederates stood ready to fight. the yelling of the rebels over ran the union troops. the rebels were exhausted from the up hill battle and were shocked by the unions assult. in the afternoon of july 3 lee order artillery barrage.

    in novemeber of 1863 a ceremony was held to dedicate a cemetery in gettysburg. the forst speaker was edward everett, who gave a two hour flowery oratio. and then abraham lincoln spoke for a little more than two mintues.

    many democrats dismayed the wars length and its high casuality rates. lincoln thought that he was going to losse again in this election but in the end lincoln ends up winning another term.

    by late march 1865 it was clear that teh end of the confederacy was near. grant and sheridan were approaching richmond from the west. while sherman was approching form the south. lee and grant met to arrange a confederate surrender on april 9, 1865 in a virginia village.
