    Lincoln was the first Republician president. When he got elected seven slave states left the union to form confederate states of America. They did not like Lincoln becoming president. He did win the majority of votes but less than 50% of America voted.

    Confederates attacked on Fort Sumter on April 12. At 2:30, April 14th, Major Anderson surrender Fort Sumpter. This Battle was the beginning of the Civil War.

    Confederates won in terms of casualities. Thomas "stonewall" Jackson was killed accidently by one of his own men at this battle when he was mistaken as a Yankee.

    This Battle took place in Virginia. The union General was Irvin McDowell. Confederate General was Beauregard. The confederates won. Many people sat and watches this battle. Union lost embarrassingly and Licoln fired McDowell and replaces him with McClellan

    Gen. Samuel R. Curtis' Union Army of the Southwest had pushed into Arkansas and established a position on the bluffs overlooking Little Sugar Creek. At the same time, Gen. Earl Van Dorn was appointed to take command of Confederate forces in the trans-Mississippi with the objective of destroying Curtis and his 12,000 Federals. The Union won this battle.

    The Emancipation Proclamation was to free confederate slaves. This went into effect January 1, 1862. Issues of this was:
    1) North freed free slaves would go North and get jobs for lower wages.
    2) abolitionist argued that if the was did not end slavery there was no point of the war.
    3) anger voters

    Battle of Fredricksburg

    This Battle was fought near Fredricksburg, Virginia. 200,000 soldiers fought in this battle. This was considered the biggest battle during the Civil War. Confederats had this vistory.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    Union General Grant won several victories around Vicksburg, Mississippi, the fortified city considered essential to the Union's plans to regain control of the Mississippi River. On May 22, Grant began a siege of the city. After six weeks, Confederate General John Pemberton surrendered, giving up the city and 30,000 men. The capture of Port Hudson, Louisiana, shortly thereafter placed the entire Mississippi River in Union hands. The Confederacy was split in two.

    Confederates and union were exchanging fires. They confederates were pushing the union through Gettysburg. Confederates camped at Seminary Ridge, parellel from the union. Lincoln was made at Meade because Meade could of stoped the war.

    Gen. William Rosecrans was the Union General.Gen. Braxton Bragg for the Confederates'. The Battle of Chickamauga was fought in southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia on September 19-20, 1863. The Confederate Victory was the end of the Chickamauga Campaign and resulted in enormous casualties on both side.

    On September 19, Union and Confederate forces met on the Tennessee-Georgia border, near Chickamauga Creek. After the battle, Union forces retreated to Chattanooga, and the Confederacy maintained control of the battlefield.

    Speech given by President Lincoln in honor of a cemetery for Union soldiers. This speech was not important or famous during Lincolns lifetime. It is now remember as an important event.

    Shortly after 10 p.m. on April 14, 1865, actor John Wilkes Booth entered the presidential box at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C., and fatally shot President Abraham Lincoln. He was taken to a hospital, where he died the next morning.

    On April 19, 1865 Union & Confederate met a the court house and Lee surrendered to Grant this ended the war. Lee was allowed to keep his own sword and men were allowed to keep horses. Grant respected Lee surrendering and made sure Union soldiers did not cheer.
