  • Abe Lincoln Election

    Abe Lincoln Election
    Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the US over John Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephan Douglas. Lincoln was in the Democratic party. He got almot 40% of the total voting getting what would be most of the Union states. He was against slavery.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    The Union needed supplies and the South cuaght the message and bombarded the Union at Fort Sumter, a fort near Charleston, South Carolina. In the end of the 34 hour battle the Confederates came out on top. This was the first battle in the Civil War.
  • Lincoln Orders Blockade of the South

    Lincoln Orders Blockade of the South
    This was one of the straetegies of Abe Lincoln with help from General Winfield Scott. They called it the Anaconda plan in which required 3,500 miles of the Southern border, and twelve major ports that the Union would block off throughout the Civil War. Would end up to be one of the main reasons the Union won the Civil War.

    1st Battle of Bull Run
    Also known as the first Manassas, was a battle fought in Virginia. It is referred to as the first major land battle in the Civil War. A lot of Union soliders panicked after the Confederates fired and it ended in another Confederate Win. This battle served as a wake up call for the Union and its soliders.

    Monitor vs. Virginia naval battle
    Sometimes referred to as the Battle at Sea, this battle was fought with two different kinds of ironclads, the Monitor and the Virginia. One of the most important and most famous sea battles in the Civil War. There are endless arguments on who actually won. This battle started the use of ironclads instead of wooden ships.

    Battle of Shiloh
    Confederates surprised the Union with an attack around Pittsburgh. The Union used a line of attack called the Hornet's Nest. The Confederates surrounded the Union soliders. On the second day the Union had more soliders, which over powered the South. The Union won. Was a much needed win for the Union as Lee was doing very good in taking over the East.
  • 7 Days Campaign

    7 Days Campaign
    Lasted from June 25th to July 1st 1862. The Union attacked with the Battle of Oak Grove. Robert E. Lee came out on top on most of those battles and General George McClellan was forced to surrender after losing 16,000 soliders over the 7 day span. The Confederates won these battles but had about 20,000 deaths. This was one of the first battles that Lee was commander in and started his winnings.

    2nd Battle of Bull Run
    This battle was much larger than the first Manassas. The Confederates were threatening the Union's communication lines and the battle took off with much more casualties. The Confederates came out with a win. It was a very important battle for the South to win.
  • Antietam

    A battle in the North, sometimes known Battle of Sharpsburg, was the first battle that took place in the North. The Union won in the end. 23,000 soliders died and it is the bloodiest battle in American history
  • Emancipation Proclamation issued

    Emancipation Proclamation issued
    Abe Lincoln gave the speech announcing the Emancipation Proclamation in September. This was only his prelim. version of the document. This would be the start of helping to end slavery.
  • Emancipation Proclamation takes effect

    Emancipation Proclamation takes effect
    Freed all slaves in America but didn't go into effect right away. It also said that all slaves could join the army if they wanted to. It led to the 13th Ammendment.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    This was a 3 day battle in Virginia. The Confederate's took a different approach and ended up winning the war. Lee's victory at Chancellorsville is called his greatest of the entire war.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    This battle had the largest number of deaths. Can be describes as the turning point in the Civil War because the Union came out on top. This battle ended Robert E. Lee's envasion to the north. The battle lasted for three days.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    Siege of Vicksburg
    This was an on going battle for about 2 months. It lasted from middle of May to the beginning of July. It led to Grant's appointment to General-in-Chief because of his success in the West and in this battle.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Gettysburg Address
    A very famous speech by President Abe Lincoln. It was after the Battle of Gettysburg and was mostly a tribute to the fallen soliders that died in the battle.
  • Battle of Chattanooga

    Battle of Chattanooga
    This battle consisted of three battles. It was a Union victory that is often referred to as another turning point in the Civil War because it allowed for the Union to be able to invade the South more deeply then anyother battle. It also made it possible for Sherman to capture Atlanta.
  • Ulysses S. Grant takes over the Union Army

    Ulysses S. Grant takes over the Union Army
    Abe Lincoln think that Ulysses S. Grant should be the head commander of the Union army. He doesn't regret this desicion as Grant wins many battles as commander.
  • Sherman Captures Atlanta

    Sherman Captures Atlanta
    General Sherman and the Union army move into Atlanta capturing the city and 3,000 prisoners. They also got one of the Confederate's generals, Brigadier-General Gorman. This battle completely crushed Atlanta which was a major Southern spot. It crushed the Confederate's spirits and was one of the major blow.

    Abe Lincoln Re-Elected
    Abe Lincoln was elected to be president for his second term in 1864. He ran against George McClellan and Lincoln won every state but 2 in the Union. McClellan didn't really want to be president or believe in his platform; they called him a peace canidate. This kept the war going without a change of rule in the Union.
  • Sherman begins March to the Sea

    Sherman begins March to the Sea
    After Atlanta, Sherman and his troops headed to Savannah and on their way they made distruction of the city. The Union won this battle. This presented Abe Lincoln with the opportunity of capturing Savannah.
  • Savannah falls to the Union

    Savannah falls to the Union
    After the March at Sea, Savannah fell to the Union in the aftermath. Sherman called it a Christmas present to Lincoln. This was a big step to ending the war because of Savannah being a big city in the South.
  • 13th Amendment passed

    13th Amendment passed
    The law set in place that embolished slavery in the United States. This came at the end of the Civil War. Ended the slavery issue in the war.
  • Union Army moves in and occupies Richmond, VA

    Union Army moves in and occupies Richmond, VA
    The Union moves into Richmond and Petersburg, VIrginia and captures those cities. It was one of the last things to happen in the Civil War. and was a huge capture and win for the Union.
  • Robert E. Lee Surrenders

    Robert E. Lee Surrenders
    After the Confederates were forced to flee Richmond and go to North Carolina which was already blocked off, Lee was forced to surrender because he had no other option. This ultimately ended the Civil War.
  • Abe Lincoln, Shot and Killed

    Abe Lincoln, Shot and Killed
    John Wilkes Booth, a famous confederate, shot Abe Lincoln in Ford's Theather in Washington DC. This was a time when the Civil War was over but it was only 5 days after the war. It affected the North deeply because they had just won the war and it was like another rebellion from the South.
