The election of 1816 was an election between Lincoln,Douglas,John bell and also John Beeckenridge .
Lincoln won the election.
Lincoln won because the North had a larger population.
It's significant since it lead to South Carolina leaving because they didn't want him as president. -
South Carolina Secedes
South believed in State rights.
South Carolina was the first to leave.
Formed the "Confederate States of America".
This is significant since the left and more states left because they had to courage to go -
Attack on Fort Sumter
Lincoln inform South Carolina he was going to supply the fort. Leaders of the Confederate State of America decides to attack Fort Sumter.North was outnumbered and surrendered the fort. It was significant because the South's attack on Fort Sumter started the Civil War. -
Battle of Bull Run/Manassas
The Northern goal for the battle of bull run was to invade Virginia. Another goal was to take Confederate capital Richmond. They decided to do this instead of the Anaconda plan since it will take a long time. Though the Confederates was successful during the battle. -
Battle of Antietam
The battle was significant since it was the bloodiest battle ever in American History. Although it was the North biggest win. After the battle Lincoln sees a chance to capitalize on the victory. So he issues the Emancipation Proclamation. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
Burnside decides to attack to try and take Richmond. Lee intercepts and get high ground. Confederates Win. It's significant because it was a Devastating loss for the Union and showed that even tho we had more people we still lost. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Through out this war , Lincoln was very hesitant to free slaves. He waited for the victory so he could free them. The battle of Antietam delivers that. It delivered the perfect opportunity. Then he freed all slaves but only in the Confederate states. -
Battle of Vicksburg
Vicksburg was the last stronghold of the Confederates on the Mississippi river. Victory at Vicksburg opened the "deep south" to the Union control. The Anaconda plan fulfilled- Union had complete control of the Mississippi River and could split up the South. -
Battle of Gettysburg
It was significant since it was a turning point for the Union. The Union had the high ground that made them have a advantage. It was the last time Lee and Confederacy ever invaded Norht. -
Gettysburg Adress
Lincoln came to Gettysburg to show appreciate to the soldiers who died. The soldiers who risk their life for the country and he did that speech for them and left. It may have been short but one of the most famous speeches. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
General William Sherman marches more than 60,000 men and 285 miles. They heated the rails under fire then putting them around trees, Sherman destroyed everything throughout his path. -
Surrendering at Appomattox Courthouse
Lee wanted to continue the fighting but in the end he knew it was pointless. Grant offered generous terms with Lee. Lee and Grant met in a small town in Virginia. This is where the war ended and Lee surrendered.
