    On April 2, 1865, Confederates and General Lee withdrew and the Union moved on towards Richmond. General Grant was the Union leader. General Lee was the Confederate leader. When Jefferson Davis heard this he burned documents and destroyed the city. Him and his cabinet members fled the city. After the fall of Richmond Lee continued to fight. Lee accepted surrender to Grant. In the town of Appomattox Couthouse, Virginia, Grant met with Lee to discuss ending the war.
