This was the first battle of the Civil war. Confederate troops attacked Fort Sumter. US troops eventually had to surrender after 34 hours under attack.

    Union forces headed to Richmond, Viginia, (Confederate Capitol) when they ran into 30,000 Confederates. Stonewall Jackson lead the Southern charge. Picnickers from DC came to watch "the end of the Civil War".
    The South won the battle.
    Both sides realized it would be a long and bloody war.
