Abraham Lincoln freed slaves in the South. Although he technically had no control in that area, it changed the perspective of the war. It encouraged slaves to escape and fight for Union. But did not upset slavery in the border states -

Pickett's Charge where the south tried to invade Union side, but failed and each army suffered many casualties.Considered the turning point of CW. After Gettysburg the South never makes another offensive move -
Battle of Vicksburg
The Union captured the Mississippi River. As a result, the Confederate army split in half. After suffering losses at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, it was hard for the Confederacy to ever recover. -
Proclamation of Amnesty
Abraham Lincoln wanted to reunited the country as quickly as possible. This proclamation said Confederate citizens could return to the Union after the war was over. Important because otherwise these citizens might be considered treasonous -
Ten Percent Plan
Only 10% of voters had to pledge loyalty before the state could rejoin the union. This is a small percentage that would later be changed 50% when the radical republicans take over. It shows again that lincoln was willing to make concessions to bring country back together. -
Battle of Atlanta
Sherman's forces defeat Confederates in Atlanta. There is increased moral in the north and Lincoln is re-elected. During the March to the Sea that followed, forced burned everything in towns which caused major economic devastation -
13th Amendment Passed by Congress
Ended slavery. It was different from the Emancipation Proclamation because it freed slaves all over the US. Southern states were required to ratify it in order to rejoin the Union. -
Surrender at Apponattox Courthouse
Confederates cut off from supplies and surrounded by Union so Lee had to surrender because there was no way out. It was the final interaction of the war. Ultimately leading to surrender =>end of the Civil War. The losses of the war were great. -
Lincoln Assassination
Murder of the president that brought the union back together. Might have actually helped his reputation before reconstruction really started. Andrew Johnson takes over for reconstruction and faces impeachment -
14th Amendment Passed by Congress
Gave civil rights to all citizens. Newly freed blacks given the same rights as whites. Now counted as population for House of Representatives.
