    The division between the North and South is evident during the election. Abraham Lincoln received no votes in nine states in the South and was not even added to the ballot in some states. In 996 counties in the entire South, Lincoln won 2 of them. Even though Lincoln did not win the popular vote, he won the election with a total of 180 electoral votes.
  • Texas Seccedes From the Union

    A convention in Texas voted to secede, subject to ratification in a popular election to be held on Feb. 23. Texas’ secession would mean that seven adjacent states from South Carolina to the eastern boundary of New Mexico now formed over 2,000 miles of contiguous territory governed by states that had withdrawn from the Union.Whatever other southern states did, there was now the potential for a viable southern confederacy, and delegates from seceded states formed a new government.

    Sam Houston is Kicked Out of Office
    Sam Houston's ardent stand in favor of the Union made him an increasingly controversial figure as the pressures that would lead to the Civil War grew greater, which made some Southerners considered him a traitor. Events moved too quickly for Houston to control and one by one his efforts failed. This message from the Convention, just four days before Houston was forced from office, shows the continuing tug-of-war for control of the state's machinery of gov. between Houston and the Convention.

    On April 10, 1861, Brig. Gen. Beauregard, in command of the provisional Confederate forces at Charleston, South Carolina, demanded the surrender of the Union garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor,Garrison commander Anderson refused. At 2:30 pm, April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, evacuating the garrison on the following day. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening of the American Civil War, ofcourse there were no casualties during the bombardment .

    Maj. Gen. John B. Magruder was a gereral in this battle, At 3:00 am on New Year’s Day, 1863, four Confederate gunboats appeared, coming down the bay toward Galveston. Soon afterward, the Rebels commenced a land attack. The Confederates captured or killed all of them except for the regiment’s adjutant.Galveston was in Confederate hands again although the Union blockade would limit commerce in and out of the harbor.

  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    On September 23, 1862, the Union Steamer Kensington, Schooner Rachel Seaman, and Mortar Schooner Henry James appeared off the bar at Sabine Pass. The next morning, the two schooners crossed the bar, took position, and began firing on the Confederate shore battery. Union control of Sabine Pass made later incursions into the interior possible.

    This campaign was a combined army-navy venture involving a move up the Red River to gain control of western Louisiana and Arkansas and cut off Confederate supplies flowing from Texas. The overall commander of the campaign was General
    Nathaniel P.Banks, while Rear Admiral David Porter
    commanded the naval forces. The expedition had cost the Union army over five thousand casualties and many pieces of artillery. The Navy lost over 300 men, and lots of military supplies.

This was the last major clash of arms in the Civil War, occurring even though the war was technically over.This battle also demonstrates that the Civil War could have continued after April 9th, 1865 in guerrilla warfare.

    The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.Many slaves in Texas did not formally hear about freedom until June 19, 1865, when General Gordon Granger and 1800 Union troops arrived in Galveston and issued a proclamation declaring all slaves in Texas to be free.They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts, and that they will not be supported idleness, either there or elsewhere.
