    The election of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, affected the Civil War because his views on slavery were supported by Republicans. His views were that he was against slavery and in 1865 the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery.

    Texas Seceds from the Union
    Texas seceded when Governor Sam Houston refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. He was upset that Texas was even considering secededing.
  • Houston kicked out of Office

    Houston kicked out of Office
    Sam Houston was elected governor and his main purpose as governor was to keep Texas from seceding from the Union. His efforts were a lost cause and Texas seceded. He was then kicked out of office because he refused to pledge allegiance to the Confederate States of America.

    Battle at Fort Sumter
    On April 10, General Beauregard of the Confederacy, demanded the Union surrender their garisson. Commander Anderson refused. On April 12 the Confederacy opened fire on the fort and the Union couldn't reply effectively. At 2:30 in the afternoon on April 13, Commander Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter. This was the fist skirmish/battle in the American Civil War.

    Battle of Gettysburg
    On July 1, Confederate and Union forces converged driving Union defenders back through the streets to Cemetery Hill. During the night reinforcements for both the North and the South arrived. During the morning of July 3, the Confederate infantry was driven from their spot on Culp's Hill. In the afternoon after a fisrt round of bombardment, Gen, Lee attacked the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. The Pickett-Pettigrew assauly momentarily punctured the Union defense but was driven back with thousands

  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    At 6:00am on the morning of September 8, four Union ships and 7 troop transports sailed into the Sabine Pass and up the Sabine River with intentions of weakening Fort Griffin so they could then take over Texas. As they got closer to Fort Griffin they came under fire from six cannons. This forced the Union boats to retire which lead to the Confederacy to capture the boats and take them prisoner.

    The Red River Campaign was composed of many battles between March 10 and March 22, 1864. It took place on the Red River in Louisiana. The purpose of the Union being there was to defeat the Confederate states and then take all of the land. They ended up losing and could not accomplish that.

    General Robert E. Lee met with Ulysses S. Grant to surrender, ending all fighting between the Confederate and Union states. In the weeks that followed the Confederate states surrendered, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured, RIP Civil War

    The Battle of Palmito Ranch was won by the Confederate States. Some troops of the Union were taken as prisoners but there were very few deaths. This battle led to the uplifting of the Union blockade.

    Juneteenth is the largest celebration of slavery being abolished in the world. It is also the oldest known celebration. On June 19th, Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas with the news that the war was over and that the enslaved were free.
