    The Presidential election of 1860 was between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Abraham Lincoln represented the Republican party's presidential nomination. Douglas represented the northern, a large part of the Democratic party. Lincoln only got 40% of the popular vote, but still beat the three other candidates. After all that Abraham Lincoln become the 16th president.

    In 1861, Texas seceded from the union. Texas was the seventh state to secede. About 76% of the Texas poulation voted to seperate from the Union. On March 2, 1881, Texas became a part of The Confederate States of America. This is important to the Civil War because Texas was a big state that the North wanted on its side.

    On March 24,1861 Sam Houston was kicked out of office. This happened because Texas wanted to seceede from the Union, however, Sam Houston did not. Sam Houston did not want to seceede because he knew that the South would lose the Civil War. This would affect the Civil War because he good strategist using tactics from the Texas Revolution.

    April 10, General Beauregard of the Confederacy wanted the Union to surrender. Commander Anderson did not do it. On April 12 the Confederacy fired on Fort Sumter and the Union could not do anything about it. In the afternoon on April 13, Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter. This affects the Civil War because this was the fist battle in the American Civil War.

    The Battle of Sabine Pass was a Confederate victory. The Union sent four gunboats and seven troop transports up the Sabine River with intentions of breaking the Confederate blockade. The small Confederate contention of 44 men used their cannon skills to capture over 200 Union men.

The agricultural South had fought a long and hard against the industrial North, but the military prowess of the Confederates was not enough to match the resources of the North. The Red River Campaign included the largest combined Army-Navy operation of the war. This was important to the Civil War because it was the last Confederate victory of the war.

Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863.
