    TX Secedes from Union
    On this day in 1861, Texas became the seventh state to secede from the Union. A state convention in Austin voted 166-8 in favor of secession. Some 76 percent of Texans who participated in a statewide referendum had voted to secede. Texas joined the Confederate States of America on March 2, 1861.
    Gov. Sam Houston, sat in silence during the vote. The convention delegates ousted Houston from the governorship when he refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.

    After Texas was annexed to the United States, Sam served a US Senator from Texas. During his term, Houston decided to run for the governor's seat. He won and trie d to keep Texas from seceding from the Union. He failed, and when Texas did secede, Houston was thrown out of office because he refused to pledge allegence to the Confederate States of America.

    Fort Sumter was the most significant of the Civil war, because it started the war. This battle began on April 12, 1861. General Beauregard sent a message to General Anderson warning him that they would open fire in an hours time. The first shot fired was ordered by Beauregard and it signaled the other Forts surrouning Fort Sumter to attack. The confederate won.

    Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth President of the United States, with Hannibal Hamlin of Maine his Vice-President. Lincoln and Hamlin received 1,866,452 popular votes and 180 electoral votes in 17 of the 33 states. John C. Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglas, all lost to Lincon. Many Southerners feared that Lincoln would have wanted to outlaw slavery. The Southern states seceded to become the Confederacy. This led to the Civil War.

    At 3:00 am on New Year’s Day, 1863, four Confederate gunboats appeared, coming down the bay toward Galveston. Soon afterward, the Rebels commenced a land attack. The confederates took Harriet Lane, by boarding her. Cdr. W.B. Renshaw’s flagship, U.S.S. Westfield, ran aground when trying to help Harriet Lane and, at 10:00 am, she was blown up to prevent her capture by the Confederates. As you can tell the Conferderates won.

    The Battle of Gettysburg was the largest battle of the American Civil War as well as the largest battle ever fought in North America, involving around 85,000 men in the Union’s Army of the Potomac under Major General George Gordon Meade and approximately 75,000 in the Confederacy’s Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert Edward Lee. Casualties at Gettysburg totaled 23,049 for the Union. Confederate casualties were 28,063. The Union won because they had more soldiers.

    A Union flotilla of 4 gunboats and 7 troop transports steamed into Sabine Pass and up the Sabine River with the intention of reducing Fort Griffin and landing troops to begin occupying Texas. As the gunboats approached Fort Griffin, they came under accurate fire and the Confederates won.

    The red river campaign wasn't the civil wars most glorius. When Union forces invaded western Louisianna. It was almost a catastrophe. When the red river was to low for ships. But thanks to an engineer they were able to get out with a series of damms.

    In an event that is generally regarded as marking the end of the Civil War, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of Confederate forces west of the Mississippi, signs the surrender terms offered by Union negotiators. With Smith's surrender, the last Confederate army ceased to exist, bringing a formal end to the bloodiest four years in U.S. history.

    Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
