    Lincoln won the election against Douglas. Lincoln only won 40% of the votes but defeated the 3 other candidates. Lincoln had a widespread of support in the north but not from the south. Lincoln was anti-slavery idea lead the south's organization of the confederate States of America.
  • TX Secedes from Union

    TX Secedes from Union
    Over the objections of Governor Sam Houston, Texas votes to leave the Union. Sam Houston's earlier election seemed to indicate that the Texans' desires to remain in the Union. However, growing fears of slave insurrections, the election of anti-slavery President Abraham Lincoln and the rise of the Republican Party made many Texans uneasy about continuing in the Union. Therefore, Texans decide to secede from the Union and ultimately join the Confederacy, leading to the U.S. Civil War.
  • Houston kicked out of office

    Houston kicked out of office
    Houston studied law and became a lawyer and then went into politics. He moved to Texas and served as the governor, he tried to make Texas avoid seceding the Union, but failed. Then Houston was thrown out of office because he refused to pledge allegiance to the Confederate states of America. He died July 26, 1863.

    Robert Anderson and his 85 soldiers were positioned at Fort Moultrie near the mouth of Charleston Harbor. Fearing for the safety of his men, Anderson moved his command to Fort Sumter. Confederate Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard dispatched aides to Maj. Anderson to demand the fort’s surrender. Anderson refused. The next morning Confederate batteries opened fire on Fort Sumter and continued for 34 hours. The Civil War had begun! The confederates victory.

    The United States Navy began a blockade of Galveston Harbor. On New Year's Day four Confederate gunboats appeared, coming down the bay toward Galveston.The CS Bayou City and the CS Neptune, sailed from Houston to Galveston.A three-hour truce was called but the Union Fleet Commander ignored the negotiation offer, attempted to destroy the grounded Westfield.

    On July 1, Confederate and Union forces converged driving Union defenders back through the streets to Cemetery Hill. During the night reinforcements for both the North and the South arrived. During the morning of July 3, the Confederate infantry was driven from their spot on Culp's Hill. In the afternoon after a fisrt round of bombardment, Gen, Lee attacked the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. The Pickett-Pettigrew assauly momentarily punctured the Union defense but was driven back with thousands

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    46 Confederate troops stopped a Union flotilla of four gunboats trying to take Fort Griffin. This was an overwhelming victory resulting in 46 Confedrates holding off a large Union force of over 5,000 troops. Only the Union sustained casualties of 230 trrops. This Confederate victory inspired the South.

    The Red River Champaign had one of the biggest military fiascos of the civil war, where it began as a combined Union force. The combined Union force was made up of riverboats and infantry, moving up the red river in Louisiana. The month long champaign was poorly managed and achieved none of the objections set forth by Union Commanders. The Red River Champaign was ended may 22 1864.

    These were a series of skirmishes between troops of the North & South along the Rio Grande River. This was considered the last battle of the U.S. Civil war. Although the Confederacy won the battle, they had already lost the war. If communications had been better these battles should have never occurred.

    Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. On June 18, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived at Galveston Island with 2,000 federal troops. Having established a presence, on June 19th, General Granger announced the freedom of all slaves in the State of Texas. This day is still commemorated by Texans annually.
