  • Lincoln Elected

    Lincoln Elected
    The two main candidates in Lincoln’s election were John Breckinridge and Abraham Lincoln. There were two other candidates in the election which included John Bell and Stephen Douglas. The election took place in Chicago, Illinois. Lincoln won the whole election after receiving 40% of all the votes. All his votes came from the northern states (Abraham Lincoln Elected President).
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    South Carolina was the first to formally secede from the federal union in December of 1860. Abraham Lincoln and the federal union fought to abolish slavery but South Carolina wanted to keep their slaves so they left the union (South Carolina Secession).
  • Confederation Formed

    All the representatives from the seceded states came together to form a unified government. They came together in Montgomery, Alabama. Jefferson Davis, of Mississippi, was the first president of the Confederate government (States Meet to Form Confederacy).

    The morning of April 12, 1861, shots were fired by the confederates in South Carolina on Fort Sumter. Soon after, the union forces surrender to the confederates (Civil War Begins).

    The first battle of Bull Run was between the Confederate troops and the Union troops in Manassas Junction, Virginia on July 21, 1861. In the end the Confederate side won (History.com Editors).
  • Battle of Monitor vs Merrimack

    The Battle of Monitor vs Merrimack was between the Confederates and the Union. The Confederates wanted to break the blockade that the Union had made. This battle was also the first navel battle. The outcome of this battle was indecisive it all depends on which side you’re looking at it from (Battle of Hampton Roads).

    The Battle of Shiloh was between the Union forces and the Confederate army. The Battle lasted two days, April 5, 1862- April 7, 1862 in Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. This battle was the bloodiest battle at the time, with having 23,000 dead and wounded. It ended in victory for the Union forces. The Battle of Shiloh also took the most capable leader, General Albert Johnston (National Geographic Society).

    The second Battle of Bull Run was between the Confederate army and the Union forces. Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army won against the Union forces. McClellan’s cabinet pushed for him to be dismissed, however Lincoln kept him as the commander (Second Battle of Bull Run).

    The Battle of Antietam was the deadliest battle that took place on September 17, 1862 in Sharpsburg, Maryland. This ended up being the deadliest battle of the Civil War. This battle showed the Union forces that they could stand against the Confederate army and actually win (Antietam).
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 in Washington D.C. The proclamation stated that all enslaved people would be set free that were in rebellious states. It also allowed African-Americans to fight for the Union army (Emancipation Proclamation).

    The Siege of Vicksburg was a pretty long event that took place on May 18, 1863. It took place in Mississippi. This battle was between the Confederates and the Union. At the end the Union claimed yet another victory (Siege of Vicksburg).
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    The battle was between the Confederates and the Union. It lasted three days, from July 1, 1863- July 3, 1863. It took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This battle had the most casualties and was the turning point for the Civil War. The Union gained another victory at the end of this battle (Battle History).

    The Reconstruction of the South lasted from the end of the Civil War in 1865 to 1877. The main goal of the reconstruction was to bring the southern states back into the union and give them full political participation. After the reconstruction, it guaranteed rights to former slaves (Reconstruction and Its impact).
  • Lincoln Re-elected

    Lincoln Re-elected
    The northern states were very supportive and excited to learn that Abraham Lincoln was elected for his second term of presidency. The outcome of Lincoln’s re-election was that the Confederacy had collapsed 5 months after the re-election (Abraham Lincoln Re-elected).
  • Robert E. Lee Surrenders

    Robert E. Lee Surrenders
    Robert E. Lee hoped to retreat and meet with more Confederate troops in North Carolina but were stopped by the Union. By the Union stopping the Confederates, it caused Robert E. Lee to surrender in order to stop the war. His surrender took place in the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. His surrender officially ended the war on April 9, 1865 (American Civil War).
  • Lincoln’s Assassination

    Lincoln’s Assassination
    The night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. His life was cut short when a famous actor and a Confederate supporter, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. This took place only 5 days after Robert Lee surrendered and ended the Civil War (Abraham Lincoln's Assassination).
