  • Union surrenders at Ft. Sumter and the Civil War officially begins

After South Carolina seceded from the Union they went w/ 68 troops to Fort Sumter which was on the harbor of Charleston. This is a disadvantage for the North because they started off on the wrong foot.
  • Lincoln requests army

  • Monitor v. Merrimack

This battle is also called the Battle of the Hampton roads. This battle was a naval battle in the Virginia harbor, at the mouth of the James River. • Battle of Shiloh

400,000 Confederate soldiers attacked the Union at Pittsburg Landing. The overpowering troops of the Confederacy drove the Union troops out of their camp. Then the next morning the Union had reinforced their troops and overpower the Confederate army. The Battle of Shiloh produced 23,000 casualties and at its time was the bloodiest battle. Lee was in the U.S. army and stationed in Texas when it seceded then he moved to Virginia, and when Virginia seceded he resigned the US army and became the the commander of Virginia’s military forces. It is also a win for the Union because it was a Confederacy retreat and the Union capital is still safe.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

The Union army under the command of General Ambrose E. Burnside experiences a horrible defeat, in this battle in Virginia. • Emancipation Proclamation

Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamtion. This proclamation states that any slave is freed in territory captured by the Union army. It also orders the enlistment of black soldiers in the Union army. So now in the battlefield they will take out their anger on the Confederacy.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

In this battle what General Robert E. Lee does ingeniously is that when faced with a larger enemy he spilt his army into parts and manages to defeat the Union army once again. • Pickett's Charge

On the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg General Robert E. Lee orders General George Pickett to assault Union positions. More than half of the 12,000 Confederate soldiers were slaughtered. Also because the Confederacy had just suffered a lot of men, and considering the amount of men they had that was not good.
  • Draft Riots

When the government tries to being compulsory enlistment into the army, riots break out in New York and other northern cities. During these riots in New York 120 men, women and children were killed, most of them being black. These people are killed before Union can return from Gettyburg and restore order. This is a disadvantage for the Union because they are already fighting a war, and they don't need somebody else putting other problems into the situation.
  • Gettysburg Address

Lincoln has a dedication for all the people who have died and has a two minute speech after a two hour long speech done by Everett. The dedication is a national cemetery. This is an advantage for the North because it gives them empowerment and dedication to prosper further in the war.
  • Ten Percent Plan

Lincoln would have a presidential pardon and amnesty to any rebel who vowed loyalty to the Union. Also Lincoln when any state ahd 10 percent of its voters on alliance with the Union then they would consider to restate them back into the Union. This was an advantage for the Union but also a slap in the face to the Confederacy because they did not win anything at all.
  • Sherman'a March to the Sea

Union General Sherman takes his army across of Georgia on a rampage of destruction that was 300 miles long and 60 miles wide. This was to show the Confederacy that the Union was not going to stop at anything in the war. This was a disadvantage for the Confederacy because this marked the end for the civil war and the Union was getting the upperhand.
  • 13th amendment ends slavery

The federal agency saw this as a difficult transition from slavery to freedom for the slaves. The bureau was lead by Union General Oliver O. Howard. • Pardon's Issued

Johnson's strict pardon policy has been abandonded. Wealthy planters are coming to secede back into the Union. By September, hunderd's of pardon's were being made in a single day. This benefited the South and the North because now they can be an even bigger and stronger nation together, instead of two separate governments.
