  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    The confederates took Fort Sumter right outside South Carolina and won the first battle of the civil war. This was the beginning of a long war. No one died but a horse and this encouraged more states to leave the Union.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    First Battle of Bull Run
    Took pace outside of Washington along a stream called Bull Run and people came and watched it. In the beginning, the Union was running the Confederates out. Then conferdates rallied behind "Stonewall Jackson." When more Confederate troops came, the Union fleed. 3,000 Union soldiers died and 2,000 Confederate soldiers died.
  • Rid of Habeus Corpus Suspension & the Draft

    Habaeas Corpus: Latin for "You shall have the body." It wa sthe Protection against unlawful imprisionment. Lincoln first suspended it when a Congressmen from Maryland to stop the Union forces. The Confedederacy draft had been established in 1862. All 18 year old men must still register for the draft today.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    General Ulysses S. Grant led his troops to Tennessee in early 1862. On April 6th the Confederates caught Grant by suprised and pushed the Union Army back in this battle. 23,000 people died. Union won. Shiloh is in Tennessee.
  • Capture Of New Orleans

    the Union takes the ports of New Orleans and choked off econemoic lifeline of the south. On the way there, the Union soldiers traveled up the Mississippi River capturing sma; port cities along the way.
  • Seven Day's Batte

    Seven Day's Batte
    Robert E. Leee attacked McCllan in what was known as the Seven Day's Battle. The Confederates won with casualites and forced the Union to retreat.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    It was one of the bloodiest days in US history. Important victory for the Union. Lee lost nearly as third of his troops.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    This was issued by Abraham Lincoln and called that all slaves in nonoccupied areas in the rebellion against the Union to be freed on January 1, 1863. It only said that slaves that were rebelling would no longer have slaves. The border states would be able to keep them. Abraham said stop saying thar this was about states rights. He said it was about slvery and told France and Britain to not help because they were against it in Europe.
  • Battle of Gettysberg

    The Confederate and Union soldiers clashed and a battle broke out. The Confederates pushed the Union back. The day after, the Union turnded back a major Confederate assault. Lee ordered General George Pickett to attack on July 3. Most of the 15,000 who took part in this were klled or captured. It was the bloodiest battle of the war with over 50,000 casualities.
  • Gettysburg Address

    President Lincoln dedicated the Union to winning the war with this address. It was an inspirational speech follwing the Battle of Gettyberg's Union success.
  • Vicksburg Mississippi

    In late april, union naval offier David Farragut captured New Orleans and then headed up to Mississippi and took port of their cities. Vicksburg Mississippi stood against them stood and stood, heavily fortified, in the way of the Union control of the river. Gerenal Grant began a siege of the citu and late may and the South surrended on the date above.
  • Siege to Petersburg

    There was a battle fought in early 1864 where Grant fough General Lee in battles that used up Confederate's strength and supplies quickly. The Union took the town of Peterburg, Virgiania while they were ahead.

    Sherman's March

    Maj. Gen William Tecumseh Sherman.
    Atlanta Campaign: after wnning the battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864, Sherman ordered the evacuation of the city and burned most of the building down in the city, military or not.He moved to Savannah. Victory at Atlanta and in getting Lincoln re-elected, March from Atlanta to the sea. Sherman's troops went on a destructive campaign that ended wiith the capture of the port city of Savannah on December 21st.
  • Surrender of the South

    Grant broke through Lee's defenses at Petersburg. Lee relized that it was a hopeless fiht and surrenedered to Grant in the twon of Appomattox Courthoyse on April 9th, 1865, This ended four years of fighting and lost lives. The Confederacy was trapped, outnumbered, and out of supplies. The Union won and brought on the period of "Reconstruction."
