  • Secession of the Southern States

    Secession of the Southern States
    The Confederate States of America was a collection of 11 states that seceded from the United States in 1860 following the election of President Abraham Lincoln. Led by Jefferson Davis and existing from 1861 to 1865, the Confederacy struggled for legitimacy and was never recognized as a sovereign nation. After suffering a crushing defeat in the Civil War, the Confederate States of America ceased to exist.

    In the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln ran against John C. Breckinridge, Stephen A. Douglas, and John Bell. Abraham Lincoln then won the election, leading to the south seceding before he was put into office.

    When President Abraham Lincoln announced plans to resupply the fort, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard bombarded Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. After a day and a half of exchanged artillery fire, Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered the fort on April 13.

McClellan, was over 100,000 men steadily driven away from the ultimate goal of Richmond and back to the James River by Confederates led by a new field commander Gen. Robert E. Lee.

The next day saw even heavier fighting, as the Confederates attacked the Federals on both left and right, after a tough fight lasting over three days the union eventually won and drove Robert E. Lees army out of Gettysburg.

    Lincoln was assassinated by confederate symphathizer John Wilkes Booth at fords theater. His assassination happened a few daysafter the surrender at Appomattox Court House of Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia to Union forces led by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, which had signaled the effective end of the American Civil War.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, is published. The novel sold 300,000 copies within three months and was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe in 1862.
